Lisa...it was written by a BYU student and his wife, directed by him, the main actor is a BYU student, and it was shot in Preston ID, which is nothing if not a mormon town. Other than that, there is no mention of the church or presentation of anything I would consider doctrinal. It is actually a lot of fun, in its quirky weird way.
Hey cool...I turned the page. Doesn't take much to get me excited.

Since all the "extras" in the movie are from the Preston, Idaho/Logan, Utah area it's a good bet that the vast majority of people you see in this movie are LDS. Jared and Jerusha Hess (the husband and wife who wrote the movei) are LDS, as is Jon Heder, the main character.

Just watched it. I loved it. The vintage Ricks College tee was about as mormon as the movie got. Ryansmama, I remembered you mentioning the song at the end so I was listening for it. I was excited when it was "The Promise" by When in Rome. I have that CD.

Ok, I'm going to have to find that CD! I LOVED that song so much...it actually sort of "made" the movie for me because I thought it also summed up what the movie was about. I hope you waited through the credits for the wedding scene at the end....

There was one positive thing that came out of the movie: a couple of my sons used to say "freakin idiot" alot - now I only hear it in reference to the movie.

Maybe I need to get out more often, but I thought Napoleon Dynamite was one of the best movies of the year. My favorite scene was when Uncle Rico hit Napoleon in the face with a steak. Too funny!

Ennui, that scene is my husband's favorite too, lol. "What the heck did you do that for?"
I like it when Uncle Rico says "I bet I could throw a football over them mountains" and his face when he realizes what he said.
Or how about when he's showing Kip and Napoleon his video...and Uncle Rico puts his hand on Kip's knee.
I LOVE the movie. But after I persuaded my assistant to see it she came back and said, "That's the dumbest movie I ever saw."

I finally saw it and I have to say it was kind of fummy but as a kid that was teased a lot in school it hit too clse to home to be really funny to me. I mostly felt sorry for the main characters.

I took it back to Wal-Mart. "Anything wrong with it? Scratched? Won't play?" Nope, it's just stupid and I don't want it. They gave me my $15 back.
But you already know how I feel about it.

I liked the movie, and I'm glad it's been successful. I don't consider it an "LDS" film, but if we do put it in that category, I doubt we'll ever see another "LDS" film out gross it.
For comparison-
Napoleon Dynamite - $45 million
Other Side of Heaven - 4.8 million God's Army - 2.6 million Book of Mormon Movie - 1.7 million Best Two Years - 1.2 million Work and the Glory - .9 million (to date) Brigham City - .8 million Charly - .8 million Handcart - .09 million

I was working with a kid, driving from Preston to Logan, and he saw uncle Rico's van and pointed it out. I hadn't seen the movie yet. I finally saw it and loved it. I grew up in Rigby, Idaho and it him home. I've met the guy who shot the cow, he is really like that. He and his wife are very good people.

I saw it last night...it was... interesting. I think Deb is hot!! I loved it, it is the one movie I have seen that more than any other defies analysis...it deserves some admiration solely for that.

It is a little sad that the Book of Movie the Movie did twice as well as Brigham City (which was awesome) but I did like the angel scene, and Nephi escaping from the ropes, and their robes, and the older Sam.
My wife liked Napolean Dynamite, but I thought it was lame. I mean, what's the point in watching a day out of my life...er, I mean....get your own tots!

A relative bought Napoleon Dynamite, so I watched it again, and this time I got through the whole movie. It is much funnier when you are not thinking, "I spent $8.00 on a ticket for this?"
Ze, please tell me that the guy who played Napoleon does not really have a fro. Is he normal?

As a deployed soldier in the Global War on Terrorism the success of Napoleon Dynmaite is a breath of fresh air in a world that is suffocating in an atmosphere of reckless self-indulgence. The day my soldiers found out that Napoleon Dynamite had been released on DVD they quickly headed for the P/X in order to purchase a copy. That night a crowd of about 15 soldiers, none of whom are from Utah, Idaho or even understand anything related to LDS culture, were crowed around a 10 inch DVD screen watching the movie. Of course there were some questions like "Does everybody from Idaho and Utah act like that?" or "Why does he act like he is on crack?" or "why was this movie made by the Mormons?" I did my best to answer all of their questions without laughing, but I think the comment that sums up my feelings about this movie was made by one of my sergeants who said "All I know is that it is made by Mormons, and I like it."Posts: 9 | Registered: Mar 2005

Advice to anyone who has decided to watch the movie and see what all the fuss is about: If you're not laughing by the end of the opening credits, you won't laugh at anything else in the movie.
My kid and wife thought it was dumb. I loved it. Now I find out that I missed the wedding scene after the closing credits - so now I have to re-rent it and put my family through it all over again.

Loved this movie but it isn't surprising since Disney did the film
Disney did not make the film. They only distributed it. It was quite a big deal that the filmakers were able to get it distributed under the Disney name as opposed to one of Disney's sister companys like Touchstone--since "Disney" attached to a movie will automatically increase sales.

My husband and I finally decided that we needed to watch Napoleon Dynamite, so we rented it from Blockbuster.
I have never seen him laugh so hard at a movie as when Rico wings the steak and hits Napoleon. We had to pause the DVD for several minutes so he could collect himself.
Personally, I was rolling on the floor at the "vote for Pedro"-mobile. Also, Kip's outfits as chosen by La-Shawnda.
However, it's definitely the kind of movie that you either love or hate. So, for all of you that hated it, I'm so sorry For the rest of you that loved it... let's all go watch it together. Party at my house!
Anybody watch with the director's comments turned on? Hubby hates that feature, but I think it's interesting sometimes.

When my military son was in Saudi this past year he got to watch "Napoleon Dynamite" twice. He said it was the funniest thing he had seen in a long time. A lot of people on the base there thought so, too.
When my husband and I watched the movie with our two daughters (both grew up in the 80's and 90's), they were laughing so hard. My husband and I looked at each other, didn't get half of what they were laughing about. I felt sorry and embarrassed for the Napoleon guy.

This is why I haven't seen and may never see this movie. I am sfraid I would just cringe through the whole thing. I cannot watch people getting made fun of. I literally have to turn away.

I would be uncomfortable at a movie that makes fun of dorks too. Napoleon Dynamite really isn't that sort of a movie, though. Napoleon is such a dork that he's cool. And the cool people are simply dorks in disguise. I didn't think the movie had any mean-spirited cruelty (other than when Napoleon insulted Deb by claiming that her mother went to college).

I think the humor is that this aimless, spineless 32-year-old "man" is taking pleasure in making fun of a woman probably not a LOT older than him going to college.
And it was Deb's mom he was making fun of.
Speaking of parents, where ARE Napoleon and Kip's parents??? I keep wondering why they live with Grandma. Posts: 4332 | Registered: Jul 2004
