I am a bit bugged, not that the thread was closed but that people had to jump in and make ridiculous and unkind judgements on one of our Nauvoodles. That makes me sad and hurts to know that someone was somewhat attacked in a thread that I started. I just want a chance to say how sad I was to come home and see that the thread I started on LDS chapels and voting was totally ruined by people picking on one of the most wonderful posters at Nauvoo. I am so sorry Tendril that some people chose to question your testimony. I still remember the impact your beautiful testimony meant to me and others in that thread on teaching children who have divorced parents. It helped me immensely. Anyway, Tendril has no reason to have to answer people's questions. When I first saw her post in the voting in LDS chapel thread, I totally knew what she meant and understood her viewpoint, and I appreciated her input. I forgot to come back and post that I agreed w/her view.

Anyway, thank you to Tendril and to all the others who helped inform me on what was a most sincere question on my part. I appreciated that discussion. As to those who contributed to the deteoriation of that thread, I just don't know. I just hope your eye isn't hurting too much from the beam. We need a little more loving and a little less judging, I think.

EDIT: I apologize if I jumped to conclusions and if I was too snappy with my comments. No harm to anyone is intended. I appreciate and learn from everyone who posts here. I don't know you Bruce but do look forward to reading from you.

Hey, Nita, I found two versions of Thumper's rule.
1. If you can't say something nice, don't say nuthin' at all.
2. If you can't say something nice, mock them inaudibly.
I sent you an email hoping that you can just shrug without being bugged. All is well, all is well. [The Wave]

93% of communication is non-verbal. Add to that inferred messages as opposed to literal.

When it comes to mocking, if it HAS to be done, it's much kinder to be up front about it. The veiled, sarcastic jabs are much sharper in my opinion.

Thank you for both of your views. I am not bugged, Meadowbee. I like Thumper's rule. I would do well to follow it. And you have a good point too, Lumina.

But if you're truly inaudible, or the forum equivalent, they won't know they're being mocked-- you'll just mock them to your spouse/best friend/cat/small child too young to understand, and they'll never be the wiser.

That's what I do. [Wink]

Nevertheless, "inaudible" mocking frequently ends up being QUITE "audible" to the mockee, however the mockee may remain inaudible about it. [Wink]

"If 'inaudible' mocking there is to be, let it not be you, and not be me." Famous quote of adorable animal who overheard Thumper secretly mocking him. [Smile] A case of mockee responding audibly.

Welcome to the club. I started a thread about not smoking in the car with children, and it turned into a debate about marijuana vs. cigarettes, and alcohol vs. marijuana. [Wall Bash]

All 3, in my oh so simple mind, have always been bad for you. [Dont Know]

Nonetheless, the thread was hijacked. Do you think there are people who just want to stop all useful discussion, who get their kicks from hijacking threads, and just get a narcissistic thrill out of becoming the center of attention? [Taunt]

Desperatly trying to think how to hijack this thread [Angst]

Seriously though, posters should start another thread if they feel the urge to hijack.

While it is unfortunate that the thread got closed, Tendril really did start it.

Her initial post was pretty judgemental, and her subsequent posts didn't improve things at all. The people that responded to the initial posts pretty much used the same tone as she did, unfortunately.

So it was one big old roll in the mud. Whoo hoo! [Razz]

Looks like everyone learned something on that thread.

But Tendril did make me think about another way of looking at a situation. It was not ALL bad. Sometimes the pearl sits surrounded by slimey oyster guts.

And sometimes even consecrated LDS sound pompous and/or judgemental, making us mortal and imperfect.

Well go read the thread, I was most certainly the one attacked and I JUDGED NO ONE. I asked a simple question.

I'm grateful that the attacker has apologized.

Accepted.

Yes, but this isn't a thread about hijacking other people's threads. You will have to go create one yourself before you can hijack that topic! [Wink]

Well, I guess I interpret this thread not to be about threads being hijacked per se, but threads where judgemental remarks and fighting occur leading to thread closure. The fighting can be on or off topic. I think the concern was just the judging part. [Smile]

If you really want to hijack tho, go to each thread, write your comment on a notepad and don't paste it in that thread. Go to the NEXT thread and paste it THERE. If hijacking is your goal, that is one vehicle to take you there. [Wink]

Hijack option number two - if you know each of our hot buttons, make a related comment specific to our individual hot buttons next to each of our posts. That will really get some of us going! [Wink]

Ya, see in my case... I'm the all-time easiest to get off topic (unless it's work or church!). You can't rightly feel too pleased to have me as your only conquest. I'm easy.

(I won't talk about pie tho - other than to talk about not talking about pie.)

Try some of the challenging ones here. There's a quest for you. [Smile]

No, Princess, you don't understand. You're supposed to be ruining the thread, not hijacking it. Like this:
quote:
So it was one big old roll in the mud.
Sweet William, I can't believe you would accuse us of such filth. People like you need your mouths washed out with soap if you're going to accuse others of rolling around in the mud, implying we are being unchaste and unclean. It's judgemental people like you who make me want to quit the church.

And as for YOU, Lumina:
quote:
93% of communication is non-verbal.
I am shocked and appalled that you would quote statistics without giving us the source of that flagrant lie. As we all know, 98% of statistics are entirely made up. This is totally inappropriate on this board.

*dusts hands off* There. That's better. [Razz]

Oooh now we need add the defensive comments:

Teenager version:

Just because you think you understand what I might have said, and just because my two thoughts were in the same post and could easily be connected together (except in my own mind where they are clearly distinct statements), its clear to me that you have no real understanding of what was said. My statement clearly meant this and all protests that I was being judgemental are null and void.

Childs version:

Its not my fault, he did it

[Laugh] FlyByNight!

[Roll Eyes] Once again, Gid, throwing in statistics with no source references. How do we know the credentials of the scientist who determined that number? He was clearly an anti-Creationist. Or an anti-gun activist. Or possibly a *gasp* DEMOCRAT. [Roll Eyes]

98% of "washees" agree that Irish Spring is the best soap with which to have one's mouth washed out with.

"unchaste and unclean" isn't that somehow redundant? Like saying oblivious woman driver or annoying country song.

But whatever you do, please don't quit the church. Folks like you are the annoying sand paper that the rest us use to polish our glorious spirits into shiny, smooth glorious-ness. [Wink]

Edit to add:
For the humor-impaired: The foregoing was a complete and utter JOKE (perhaps funny, perhaps not). Well, the Irish Spring part is objective fact, but the rest is a joke.

So what we talk about is a joke to you, huh, funny man?

Thank you for that charming accolade. You are second in sweetness only to me.

You think that when people talk about their feelings.....yada yada yada...that it's just one big party?

Well, duh.

People that are as judgemental and hurtful as you need to be banned from Nauvoo...

Roger that

...because you ruin my testimony when you laugh at my jokes.

Really? How bizarre. My testimony is shaken usually when people DON't laugh at my jokes.

But potaytoe potahtoe.

"But God is the judge he putteth down one, and setteth up another." In this case, I'm sure you'll be the one he putteth down - and people that agree with me will be setteth up!!

Oh, this is just toooooo much with which to putteth up!!!! [Big laugh]

YOU are that liar, "sweet" William. Enjoy your eternal "bonfire."

Got any smores?

I know I'm right because I'm righteous and I know a general authority. He'd agree with me too.

Well, I have a letter from the Navy commending me on my non-existent Eagle scout rank. So what else ya got! Hummmmmmmm?

*flips her hair and stalks off*

And what lovely hair it is, babe. [Big laugh]

Methinks this thread is in danger of a quick sweetening.

Welcome, Bruce, I think. I accept a little more noise and commotion from my own kids than from the neighbor's. (Actually, I accept their noise, too, but I'm just making a point.) So it's probably only natural that posters with a favorable history at Nauvoo are given a little more flexibility than newbies, or those who frequently come across as disturbers of the peace. But patience and tact will win the day.
