[I meant that figuratively, I know President Hinckley's recent advice!]
At first I was rooting for that gray-haired bluegrass guy Taylor Hicks but I don't think he did too great a job on Wednesday night. I'll still watch out for him and root for him, though, he is so cool.
You can see the list of contestants (to reference for names) here.
Prediction: Kevin Covais (shrimpy 16-year-old) and Brenna Gethers (the annoying "catty" fights-with-Simon girl) will be the next to be booted.

My money is on a there being a Season 6. Season 7 will be combined with Survivor, as ratings on both shows will have fallen. So, the new combined show will be called Survivor Idol (or American Survivor, depending on which title is left on the island after the audience votes). Not only will the singers have to sing and perform feats of wonder to win amnesty for the evening, they will have to openly create hardship and problems for the other contestants. And in between contestants songs, there will be cage wrestling: First bout, Simon Cowell vs. Jeff Probst (host of Survivor); second bout, Paula Abdul vs. Anne Robinson (host of The Weakest Link); and in the final bout of the evening, Randy Jackson vs. Emeril Lagasse.
{edited to add the names for the folks in the featured bouts I didn't have on the tip of my tongue }

I have been watching as well , and I agree I hope Brenna is the next girl to go, and that blond girl who wore the sleaveless brown shirt when she performed. The guys didn't all impress me, so there are a number I could see go.
I liked the rocker guys--bucky and chris? I suspect Taylor will be around for some time, because he is so different and stands out. I think Sway and one of those seventeen year olds will go next of the men!

Talk about grumpy sticks-in-the-mud. At least catherder was funny and clever in his response, people! If you wanna trash the show, you can do much, much better than that!
Myself, I like the show. I care, M. As far as watching television goes (a not-infrequent topic here) this show is pretty good, pretty interesting and entertaining to me. Posting stuff like that, M, is distinct troll behavior. I'd much rather see a well-thought-out post of why you don't like the show. This is a discussion board.

I've only seen one episode (ever), but it happens to have been this season.
I don't remember most of the contestants, but I think I remember being impressed by Paris (if that's who I'm remembering...it's been a couple of weeks).

As I said earlier, I've been watching this season, and I've watched parts of it past seasons. One thing I don't like about it, is that they make the people who have been eliminated sing after they tell them they are out of the show. Why do they think we should have to hear again the song that wasn't good enough for them to stay on the show!
Euphrasie, I think Paris is good too--and she is only 16-17 yrs old! She has quite a personality, as does the other 16yr old girl, and they both have good voices!

My family loves to watch this show. I usually only watch fragments until they narrow the field more. I will report back when I form an opinion as to who I think will take all.
My favorite winner to date of past seasons is Clay Aiken(He was second place but it was very close). I would have liked to have gone to his concerts when he came to my area. My sister took my mom to his Christmas concert. The second part was the best according to my mom. For Christmas a couple of years ago, my sister gave me his autobiography. It is an easy read. For a young man, he has overcome a lot and is a great example that one can stick to the values that they hold. When he was making is first compact disc album, the people making the ablum said that he needed more suggestive lyrics, but he did not relent on his standards. And he proved them wrong by being very successful.
I will stay tuned.....

I am an unabashedly loyal fan of the show. I missed the first two seasons, but have made it a point to watch as much as possible of all the others. My favorite female vocalist is Katharine McPhee, and Taylor Hicks got most of my votes for the guys last week!

I've almost never watched the show here in the US, but when I was in New Zealand last year, I was amazed to see that they have New Zealand Idol. Being a much smaller country, they had a more folksy sort of show, with less hype and commercialism than I've seen here. But it was a lot of fun to watch. When I came back here to the US, I was disappointed at the difference.

Fair enough.
When I need accounting work done, I go to the best professional CPA I can find.
When I need construction work done, I go to the best professional contractor I can find.
When I desire to hear singing or to watch a television show, I likewise want to see and hear from the professionals. My feeling is that if people are going to get screen time in a nationwide medium it should be because they've already proven themselves in lesser venues and have built up a formidable reputation.
BTW, before anybody shoots back something along the lines of, "Well, the 'professionals' have to get their start somewhere," I agree. It's not like there's any shortage of voice instructors, amateaur festivals, nightclubs, weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, local sporting events, dances, parties, etc. available for them to do that.
I guess it just boils down to the fact that I see no reason to idolize celebrities. They are professionals doing a job. Just as a skilled neurosurgeon, lawyer, or professor is doing his or her job. They give me a (very enjoyable) opportunity to withdraw from the stresses of the world for a while, but once that withdrawal is over I have no reason to continue to identify with them personally, idolize them, or be in any way curious about their personal lives.
That being said, watch what you like! I'm just responding to the invitation to spout off and, as usual, there's no accounting for taste.
However, the T.V. ratings tell me I'm likely in the minority again. <sigh>

LOL! I think that might be it: a NASCAR-esque desire to "see the crashes."
Myself, I don't watch the show to see top-of-their-game professionals. To me, the show is a competition, and it's a pretty good one.
Combine that with my love of singing, I feel like I can identify to some degree to a lot of the contestants.
But this:
quote:I guess it just boils down to the fact that I see no reason to idolize celebrities. They are professionals doing a job.
I dunno where that came from. Who said anything about idolizing anyone? I don't idolize celebrities. Far from it, I think a lot of them are world-class idiots that live in a fantasy world. Rest assured, just because the show is named American Idol doesn't require you to idolize anything I don't even buy their albums.

The 2nd religion thing was a joke, BTW, although probably not the best one I've ever come up with. I don't idolize anyone on this show. American Idol is just a name, not a request to bow down at anyone's feet.

Kelly Clarkson's the only one that's had any staying power, althought I think it's funny that the phrasing on hersecond abum reeks of Evanescence in so manny spots (and considering Ben Moody was her co-writer on a bunch of tracks, I'm not surprised; "Because of You" lifts phrasing almost exactly from "My Beloved").

So who will be watching tonight? I'm planning on grading papers and watching. Today I discussed the show with my students before class started and they also like Taylor and dislike Brenna--though I also heard that they don't think the girls are that impressive as a whole.

Double platinum is nothing to sneeze at, to be sure, but again, Kelly is the only one that has two albums out that have both done very well. Give Carrie a couple of more years and we'll see if she has the "staying power" as I alluded to previously. If she throws out a sophomore album that does platinum or better, I'll stand as corrected .

I haven't watched American Idol, but I have heard Carrie Underwood sing on TV and the radio a number of times. She is from Oklahoma, so they promote her here quite a bit. I think she has a nice voice--a little less polished, perhaps, than someone who's been singing longer--and will probably do fairly well. It's hard to say, though.

P.S. I was watching some show recently (don't remember what) and they showed clips of some of the ones who failed the auditions to get on the show. Goodness, they were bad! I could have done as well as most of them. And what about that guy--William Hang, or whatever his name was--that got 15 minutes of fame for being terrible?! I guess I'm too sympathetic--I felt so sorry for them. Sorrier, I think, than they were!

I agree--I hope Brenna goes soon. I find her to be annoying. I'd also like Heather Cox to go as well, as I also find her annoying. Though, you are right that Kinnik Sky could easily go--her gretchen wilson song was kind of sad.

I think that Brenna has to go. And she can take either Heather or Kinnik with her.
I was so impressed with the voice of the girl with one name. Is it Mantisa? She won't make it all the way, because she doesn't LOOK like the image they'll be going for. But she certainly deserves to have a fabulous career in music.

My pick for the final six females are: Mandisa Lisa Paris Kelli Katharine The last spot could be either Melissa or Ayla
I think Brenna and Heather will go home this week.
I missed the guys show last week, so I don't have as much opinion of them.
Oh, albums I have: Kelly Clay (2) Rueben Kimberly Locke Josh Gracin John Stevens (my favorite of all the ones I have) Carrie Underwood And miscellaneous other group ones.

I thought last night's performances by the women were pretty lackluster. I wasn't thrilled by any of them, even my girl Paris. I'm hoping things pep up some next week, and that the guys have much more energy tonight.
Question 1: Do you think American Idol is feeling the pressure to produce another male winner? Only 1 of 4 past winners was male, and poor Ruben faded faster than anyone else (a lot of people seem to think that Clay won Season 2).
Question 2: Do you think that Kellie Pickler or even <sob> Paris Bennett really has a chance to win since they're so much like Carrie and Fantasia respectively?

I agree with Nicole on last night's show. I'm still a fan, but I didn't care enough about anyone's performance to vote. Tonight's program has to be better! I predict a guy will win this season.

Heh. I was just making an observation about human nature. I don't follow the show, but I swear the discussion sounds just the same as an adult who's never played Poke'mon listening to a pair of kids jabber on about this or that pokemon beating that pokemon.
It struck me as somewhat ironic, considering the title of the thread...

I thought the guys were, for the most part tonight, pretty dull. Oh, the talent's definitely there, all right; they just need to relax and figure stuff out a little more.
If it were just ME voting, then shrimpy Kevin Covais and croony David Radford would be the ones leaving. ( BTW I only know the names by looking at idolonfox.com/contestants/ ). I think Kevin is singularly the most overhyped one on the show--he sounds terrible to me but the judges rave. I doubt he'll be voted off quite yet, so my prediction will be:
Will Makar David Radford

I was shocked at who I like tonight , Gedeon( he spells it weird and I might have even spelled it weirder) and Chris the rocker and I don't like rock , but to me they were the best tonight. Taylor was a trying to hard to throw in his soulful moanings and Ace is too much of a pretty boy , I think he has been practicing in front of the mirror ( his LOOK, not his singing ) too much.

I only caught two singers last night. Gedeon was terrific, I thought. Sadly, he no longer smiles when he faces Simon. The poor guy will soon be twitching and ticcing if Simon doesn't apologize soon for his inappropriate remarks about Gedeon's smile. (On the other hand, Brenna's two-rowed plastered-on smile drives me crazy.)
The other guy I saw last night was young Kevin. He'll be on for awhile, because everyone likes an underdog, especially one who looks like he's had years of bullies kicking sand in his face. I hope he stays long enough for a good makeover, which will clinch his new and unexpected status as a "hottie."
Sorry to hear that my man Taylor wasn't so good last night. Anyone else have a different view?

I enjoyed Taylor's performance, and Bucky's, and Elliot's, and Chris', though my room mate didn't like Chris'. She is a big fan of Taylor, however, so she votes for him regardless.

Most of the guys were unimpressive. Elliot has a very nice voice but can it overcome the nerdiness? I love Taylor's voice, in fact, I'd buy a cd of his today but can he overcome the gray-hair "i'm a lit-tle different" vibe? The rest are unimpressive, IMO. Ace needs to go. Radford needs to go. Bucky needs to be subjected to cruel and unusual punishment because that's what he subjected Garth to last night.
As for the ladies, I love Katharine McPhee. I am grateful I never knew anyone like her growing up, because she seems like a kind of a-little-bit-flaky-but-so-talented-and-attractive-girl-that-she -ends-up-ruining-your-life-but-you-Just.Can't.Let.Go- girl. She's great.

Having been wrong on every prediction every year thus far, I have no problem posting my prediction for the final three females:
Ayla Paris Mandissa
and the final three males:
Ace Chris Elliott
And the final winner is:
Chris (though i wouldn't mind if Elliott won).
What's with all the young guys singing songs that their parents grew up on??? Last night the males reminded me of the performers on Lawrence Welk, attractive with good voices, but when they tried to sing popular songs, their performances came across as technically correct, but inauthentic and lacking of originality. (Sorry, but Kevin singing "Heard it through the grapevine" was painful for true Motown fans). While I really enjoyed Elliott's voice and performance, I had jut told my wife I was longing for a little edgy David Clayton Thomas type of performance, when Chris came out and made me a believer. I loved the energy.
Anyway, that's my take and I'm sticking to it (until next week, at least)
