I also have to add De-junking my sons room to the list (AKA-"Scouring of the Shire"). It's a job best done when he's not around.

Is it one of those weird morally ambiguous chinese endings like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon? I love that movie, save for the ending... which is really weeeeeeeak...
Hero has a similarly bad ending/lovestory...
Asian films often end badly...
I'm a Miyazaki fan, so I'm pretty much garanteed to catch Howl's eventually...

I posted on my board about this, but I thought I'd taunt Ray here, too; I just bought the last copy of Bean's Song at Amazon, and now anyone buying through Amazon needs to wait 4-6 weeks. Of course, I imagine that it's the indendent warehouse that Amazon works through that is out. But most people will consider it to be Amazon that is out (and any other online bookseller that uses that warehouse). So I've singlehandedly made the book unavailable to the masses! The girl jumping off of a bridge rather than living with her beloved.
It's a bhuddist thing... the belief that oblivion and "nirvana" is above all other virtues... that religion has real problems with the concept of noble suicide... then again a lot of religions seem to have that problem... ahem...

The ending is an unhappy one. And from Western eyes tragically not understandable. So, I suppose it depends on your understanding and/or tolerence for people making moral decisions related to living that would be differnt from your own.
I know that's cryptic, but I don't know how detailed you might want me to be about the ending. Which may or not prepare you for it and thus allow you to enjoy the rest of the movie.

I would really like to enjoy the movie. But I think it is fundamentally flawed from a Western (and more particularly a MORMON) perspective where life is not just all about suffering, and in a mormon sense, the love of a woman and a man and the prospect of family are sacred. It's a very sad show because of that. The monastic elements of self-denial of things that REALLY ARE sacred and good, really bother me.
If the girl's actions are so deplorable that she can no longer permit herself to live on the earth, and she's applying her own self-justified form of a death penalty, that too denies the whole nature of a Savior.
I don't entirely follow some of it though, and would love to hear a deeper discussion of it. (All this talk has me wanting to rush home and watch it again...)
I do think the movie could work on a symbolic level... though... and of course there are those who might suggest that since she can leap from bamboo to bamboo and run on water, she's not killing herself by jumping off a bridge, she's just flown away...

You didn't say how much detail you want to hear. But I will say the death in the end is not nearly as meaningless (from and LDS perspective) as it is in CTHD.

Ah... I see... well... actually I don't... but not because of your comments... but mostly because of the fact that I've not yet seen the movie... though I'm disappointed to here there's a (not as) pointless death scene at the end of it... I'm much less enthused to see it now... so... um... thanks for the spoiler... Grrrr....

Well, thanks for the commentary. It ended up being "The Other Sister" because it was on cable and I was soo lazy to get up and put a disc in.
I watch TV so rarely, it seems like a clandestine tryst when I actually sit on the couch for no reason. And , like most clandestine tryst's, it sucked me in and held me there.
PS..I slept through Crouching Tiger...and hated the end. I loved HERO and House of Flying Daggers. The "Bean/Drum Dance"(what else do you call it?) in Flying Daggers is FANTASTIC in surround sound.

Don't do anything that I... oh wait... nevermind... I hope you had a great time outta here... I'm flying to Burbank today.
Our company's doing a "teambuilding" thing at or around Universal Studios... talk about a boondoggle... I'd enjoy it more, save that my wife's due to give birth in a couple weeks... and so I'm a little on eggshells about it...
It's raining here in Seattle, so the weather in So. Cal, will be a nice change. I might get to wear shorts... (I'd given up the practice for the next six months cuz in Seattle when it starts raining it typically doesn't stop for six months... )

I was trying to be circumspectin what I said about the movie. However, I'm the type of person that if you tell me an entire movie, I'll still go see it. And yes there are times when I'll read the end of a book before I finished the rest.
So you probably don't want to hang around me when the new Harry Potter book comes out.
But, then none of you are around IRL, so you can hear me muttering. HP didn't need to die ... Posts: 10895 | Registered: Oct 2004

And one birthday party down (the easy family one). Everyone loves the munchkin's presents. He got a mini basketball hoop and plastic hockey sticks. Guess who spent all evening playing with them? Posts: 5737 | Registered: Oct 2004

You know that guy--the one from "Nightmare Before Christmas" who makes Sally and opens his head up occasionally to scratch his brain?
Does he ever visit the Fortress? 'Cause it seems like it would be his kind of place - as far as the building goes at least.
I could really use his skill. Just open the skull and alter a few wayward thoughts...you know, the ones you want to forget-well, not just forget, but change altogether- but because you really want to stop thinking about them you can't stop thinking about them because you think about how you don't want to think about them everyday.

Mornin'. Guess who meant to get to bed early last night...but somehow didn't?
So I saw a movie trailer yesterday for an upcoming movie called The Prestige. It looked really good. Anyone else seen it?

I just saw the trailer too. It's on my list. Last week the local theater was selling half priced gift cards. So I bought a bunch for me and my friend who is a single mom and a student. She and I can go to the movies (which we love doing) without me feeling quilty for messing up her budget. We have a list of movies we want to see when they come.
