I've been to the fair, and have I got the goods tonight: funnel cake with five kinds of berries and whipped topping, scones with honey butter, warm cinnamon almonds, buttered corn on a stick, cotton candy. Oh, and candy apples. For anyone up at this ridiculous hour, help yourself. Anyone else, it's all yours in the morning (or if you have a little more sense, after breakfast sometime )

Michaela, How did you know I had to deal with an ant infestation yesterday?
I was sitting at my computer when I felt the sting of a bite! After the third attack I went looking by my front door to discover a swarm of ants. I sprayed them down, swept off the porch then discovered more along the front of the garage. They all would have been okay if they just hadn't invaded my space and caused me to start looking! V.

I'm creeping around quietly, trying to avoid waking sleeping houseguests. It will be fun, and a livelier than usual day, with a 4-yo and a 2-yo on the premisis today.
The little girls pick every flower they can reach in the backyard, plunk them in a basket or the lift-up lid of their riding toys, and present them to me so generously. That's why I mostly just allow marigolds to re-seed themselves year after year. My laissez-faire approach may be a menace to other more committed backyard gardeners visited by these little flower-gatherers, but I hope not, because it works well for us.
Just checking the refrigerator for quick breakfast ideas. Oh, Gotta run, someone is moving about. Take care, all.

I think things have settled down today after a restless night! I can do this, I know I can! I'm glad I can come here and whine a little when I need to and know that someone will show up with hugs! V.

What's that buzzing sound? Aha! I C a B on the Porch; I think it's been a few days since that welcome sound was heard here. * Hugs Bee verrrry carefully, avoiding stinger* <chuckle>
Thanks for the goodies people have been bringing. I've been a bit busy & haven't had time ti fix anything beyond my occasional fruit offering. Maybe V would like some of this warm peach cobbler.
No, Punkin, this isn't for you. I did bring some FRESH salmon for you cats & beef bones for the pooches. No, I didn't splurge; the meat storage at the market broke down & they had to sell off everything in a hurry. So I filled my freezer. And did you critters ever luck out! <sticks out tongue at Punkin>
Look, here come Ivie & Anmabelle. Someone keep these cats off me until I can bone the salmon for them! Ahh, Dreyfuss to the rescue. Thank you, Dreyfuss...yes, I have a treat for you.
The Porchupines will have grilled salmon tonight, or BBQ pork ribs for those who prefer that. I'll just make a big salad with greens, bell peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes, etc.; with all the desserts we've been having, a carb-less meal won't kill any of us. We have enough meat for cookouts, soups, & stews for the rest of the month.

Okay, you need to ship some of that cobbler this way, lovely Curelom! I am having a serious need for fruit. The problem is that I have to be really careful about eating things that a filled with anti-oxidents! You wouldn't believe the list of things I must avoid right now! Most fruits, including my beloved watermelon, are on that list.
I love grilled salmon! Yum! V.

I wanted to say Good night here and that I think of you all often! V, sorry it has been so hard for you as of late.
Are there any picnic treats left that the ants didn't get?
Did Bok bring any fruit? Is that just an inside joke? I like fruit a lot too, by the way. My parents go to this great market that has pleasantly sweet plums, peaches, nectarines etc.

Well, it so happens there was more of the salmon that I didn't freeze, & being virtual salmon, it's still fresh. So I'll grill some for you, Mimi--just sit there, it'll be done in a few minutes. I found a pineapple & cut a little of it & a couple of peaches & added some ginger, honey, & a squeeze of lime for peach-pineapple salsa. I've had mango-pineapple salsa, so we'll see how this turns out. If I'd known, I would have made it earlier & let it steep for awhile. Someone made coleslaw for lunch, so I'll get that out.
How about some warm ginger tea? Will that help calm you & the little one down? I also made some peppermint tea.

I know it's the Sabbath, but crumbs from our feasts were starting to attract ants. We can live with two or three, maybe even four, but we don't want a whole colony. We can peacefully coexist if they stay in their own anthill off the Porch.
Dreyfuss, you don't need to bother the ants. I'm sorry they were messing with your food. Once the crumbs are gone, they'll leave.
* Gives Dreyfuss a new rawhide chew strip. *

So nice to sit in the swing here and count the stars and smile a little and think of all of you. Babies picking flowers, babies who've no idea yet what a flower is, friends encouraging friends through the thick and thin of life (and some of it is pretty thick right now), silly songs, and pups and kitties to remind us of the sweet and simple joys. That's the Porch.
I brought some new photos for the walls. I entered them in the state fair. Amateur of course. Surprisingly, they won ribbons (pink and white), so I thought I'd share them for awhile. I especially love this one. It's a pic of the temple taken from the edge of the reflecting pool at dusk.
This one has a story. It's a photo of Bear Lake. Very simple. As soon as I entered it, I knew it was a mistake. I had plans to beg for it to be returned on the first day of the fair. By then, though, it had been dropped on both corners (from a VERRRRRY tall building, apparently) When I first laid eyes on it, one of my daughters called out, "Look, Mom, there's your picture!" I acted like I had no idea what she was talking about and was trying to slide another photo over it when I noticed it had a ribbon hanging from the corner. I was drop-dead happy. Who knew my Bear Lake photo would keep me smiling all week.

Well, hubby got introduced to his new boss this morning! I knew his chances for promotion weren't great against this guy but they could have at least taken him aside and let him know before just dropping a brick on him! I was really hoping for the extra pay. It would have meant being able to afford buying a decent house. Oh well!

V, I hope the prospects for advancement or better pay or better than they look at the moment.
Many months ago I was thinking about your oldest daughter, but I figured it would seem to strange as I was really going over in my head about her situation. It is so good to hear that she has come to her own realizations. I did want to share my thouhts now that as hard as it is knowing that your daughter is a very talented woman and her life seems to be on hold at the present that you are fortunate to know where she is and that she seems to be in a safe place. Also, I wonder if your daughter does much of what she does for the children rather than for the woman. She sounds like she has a dear heart. If she is helping children she is doing good. In time, I hope that she finds the best path for herself that will help her to fulfill some of her own dreams.
In regards to your other daughter, I forget if I ever mentioned a study that may suggest that acting can help people with nonverbal cues if my memory serves me. It has been a long time since I read the study so it is rather vague to me. However, I would think that doing a little acting even on a small scale can do wonders for a person in so many ways.

Abby, please don't ever hesitate to share your thoughts! I sometimes need to be reminded that there are some silver linings in this cloud that dd1 is surrounded by!
It's my "mom" heart that worries for her and only wants what God wants for her life! He doesn't want any of us to live in an abusing situation and that's where she's at! Yes, I know part of this is her love for the kids! It's sad that "Aunt" Shanna does more for them than their mother. I miss her even more after we've had a good weekend. Having her drop out of sight again makes me unhappy! I just keep her in my prayers every day. V.

Yes it is, and the waning days of summer are golden too. I'm about to go out and read on the patio before the evenings grow too chilly for my frost-sensitive fingers. I'm about as hearty as a tomato plant, I guess.
The book I'm reading now is called The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio. It's a true account of a family of 10 children in the 1950's, whose mother provides many necessities and comforts of life for the family by the poems, jingles, and 25-words-or-less contests she enters ... and wins! The father is an alcoholic, and seems antagonistic to the mother's successes. I'm still early in the book though, so we'll see how it turns out.
Oh, I found a nice snack to munch while I read. , found it at Costco. It's Kirkland's Fruit and Nut Medley. I'm leaving a bowl for you to sample. Good, isn't it? Posts: 4056 | Registered: Apr 2005
