I brought some lemonade & melon slices for Polly's parched throat after that tedious painting job.
And here are some iron-rich beef burritos & dried fruit for V--thanks for feeding the vampires, sometimes we forget they hafta eat too.
There's enough of everything for the rest of us, plus chili & a green salad.
Yes, Punkin, I remembered to buy tuna today. Of course you may go vampire-watching tonight. I know they're cute. . But they won't be out for hours. They don't like sunshine. Just keep your neck out of their way, & don't encourage Annabelle to bring any here for V. .

What joy, you, my friends bring to me from the Porch!
Our missionaries are holding classes with the Preach My Gospel book. I was the only one present tonight but we had a very good discussion on the attributes of Christ. It really helped me to see some issues more clearly.
My girls are my love and life. If I can love and serve all those around me, but especially my family, then I am showing charity. My prayers for my girls will be answered.
Well, I will wander awhile and come back here to camp out for the night. V.

We have contract in hand for the house. I just need a third party to read over it for us before we sign it and send it to the mortgage company. Meanwhile, I still have questions. New pieces of the puzzle keep cropping up!
I am off to my Shire meeting. Will be back later. V.

Polly, maybe you can stop by here next!!! A few months ago, my husband decided to START a painting project while I was in Denver at a Dr. appt...... the key word there is START..... we still have half-painted walls in three rooms...... but I guess I can't complain about plain white walls anymore!!
Its been busy around here the last few days. We have added to our house. We have a young girl that will be living with us over the next year, kind of a mother's helper. We are soooo excited to have her here, and hope its a good experience for her too. She is not LDS, and is not from around here..... actually she's from down closer V.'s way.... so I sure she thinks some of the things we do are NUTS!! She saw our food storage yesterday,.... and her jaw dropped open... and she said " I heard that Mormons stockppile food.... I just didn't really believe it!".... It was funny. The kids love her, and we feel so blessed to have her here!!

V, I hope you won't move too far from Nauvoo. We need to have you around for company, & for your good influence. And Annabelle would be devastated if you left (and you are NOT taking her somewhere millions of miles from the Porch, away from the Porchupines & her other friends).
MiMi, it sounds like a win-win for everyone to have your mother's helper. What a great help for everyone, a little respite for you, & maybe an opportunity for her to learn about life away from home. Maybe your kids are excited because they think she'll be really easy-going & they can wrap her around their little fingers (I know that's not gonna happen, though).
Polly, you need a break from all that painting & other work on the house. I'll talk to the company that's doing some repairs in my neighborhood & see if I can make a cyber-deal for them to come & finish up all your projects at home.
Meanwhile, here's some watermelon cooler for everyone. It's a warm day here & this is really refreshing. It's made with pureed watermelon, lime juice, a dash of sugar, & enough water for the desired consistency. I go easy on the sugar, but you can thin or sweeten if more it you wish.
Yes, Ivie, of course there's enough for you to have a taste. I'll put a little in a dish & you critters can all sample it.

I wouldn't dream of leaving Nauvoo! My Nauvoo family is very important to me! Well, I need to shut this down as it is thundering here. to all! V.

Come to think of it, you did say that. My memory must be failing . I hope it does work out so you can have your own roof over your head--and Annabelle's. She looks so cozy curled up in your corner with you . No, Pepper, I don't think they would mind if you joined them, but climb up nice & easy so you don't wake them up.
I can hear that thunder off in the distance. The fog here must be muffling it somewhat, & it's actually a bit muggy here. Maybe we are also in for some storms.
Don't worry, Ivie, the thunder won't hurt you. For a brave little cat, you can be such a chicken sometimes. No, sweetie, Punkin has been ordered not to bring any vampires here. I know, she's been known to disobey. You can come over here with me & we'll fight them off together.

Man, I missed some great food. I would love to have had some of the grapefruit and oranges. I had to take a little "vacation" to the hospital. I had a very bad urinary tract infection. They couldn't regulate my irregular heart and made me stay 5 days!
I love coming here and being with such wonderful people. I am like V, I would miss my friends here. Love to all.

Good evening, Porchupine friends. It's a damp, foggy night in the Bay Area, but those oranges & grapefruits still look luscious. I'd better enjoy some before they are all gone. Thanks, V.
I brought some new fleece blankets for these cool Porch nights, & we can take them up to the Cabin in a couple months when we settle in there for the winter. Some of our older ones have seen better days. Even though we keep them clean, they get frayed from the pets dragging them all over the place. Now we can keep the good ones for our use & let the critters enjoy the old raggedy ones to their hearts' content.
I made some batter & put it in the fridge, in case anyone wants waffles in the morning. We also have honey butter, genuine maple syrup, & raspberry preserves. And if the oranges & grapefruits last through the night, we'll have some Vitamin C with our breakfast.
G'nite all . <zzzz> V & Annabelle are asleep, & Ivie & I are going to follow suit. I don't know where Punkin is, but if she shows up with any vampire bats, please take them away from her & release them back into the forest.

Mmmmmmm..... some fruit at midnight sounds just right!! I am up a bit..... kids around here are sick. They are taking turns getting up, and I have gotten up enough times that I may have a hard time getting back to sleep, because of anticipating which one might get up next, and wondering if they are feeling ok. 3 of them have high fevers, chills, achy, and just generally do not feel good. It must be an early flu bug around here of some sort. I am probably next, so I should try to get some rest...... Posts: 1070 | Registered: Oct 2006

MiMi, take good care of the yung'uns as well as yourself. If you're laid up, everything else in the entire household will go straight to Sheol in a handbasket. (unless your nanny has started--then just keep her healthy).
It looks like some people had waffles--the iron has been used & part of the batter is gone. I hope they were a welcome change from omelets & ham & fruit & all that other everyday stuff. We'll save some fruit for you so you can get your Vitamin C.
Punkin, did you want to try a bit of waffle? OK, I'll put some orange marmalade on it. My. what a little gourmet you are. , OK, your four-footed majesty, if all your needs are satisfied, I am going to watch the Tabs' broadcast now & then do a little reading.

Our poor nanny.... she is probably wondering what she has gotten herself into. All 4 of the kids ended up being sick.... and have not been themselves.... the two little ones have been irritable beyond belief because they are not feeling well. What a crazy first week for her!!
I think those waffles might be enough to entice her to stay around another week!!
We went to feed some horses tonight. It was a nice relaxing evening. The kids all loved it, and the horses loved the apples.... it was a win-win situation all around
Well.... I have got work tomorrow.... I am half dreading it, and half excited. I have taken the last year off (well.... sort of, I have been doing all the absolute necessities of work from home and putting everything else off as long as possible... which means I have got a list longer than the great wall of china looking me straight in the face tomorrow).... but hopefully it will be a good day. I am just going in for a couple of hours to get a good start on things. Wish me luck!!

Thank you so much V for the oranges and grapefruit. I love them both and am glad I get some fresh ones.
The waffles are wonderful too. Here are some fresh raspberries, blueberries, strawberries with real whipped cream for the top. For those who prefer, I made an onion gravy. I brought along several syrups too. Enjoy!

I cannot tell you how good it has been for me to come to the porch today and listen to all the voices that have spoken here since my last visit. How humbling to have friends who pray for you and put your name on the altar in the House of the Lord. I did feel angels comforting and attending us, even during the most trying moments. We spent six or seven hours in a hot, stripped-out, windowless room waiting for help at the emergency room. As it turned out, no one knew what to do and there was no one in the state or in neighboring states who would admit Ryan, so we took our beloved hospital-gowned crisis home in the middle of the night, with a stop to get him dressed and back into his seatbelt again. I have felt the influence of heaven as ideas have come that were not there before. After several nights of no sleep, ideas came to me that not only allowed Ryan to sleep during the night, but to rest during much of the day. We are just now finishing the round of meds that allowed him to slow down enough for all of us to heal sufficiently to cope. Ryan and I received priesthood blessings in the emergency room. We were also greatly blessed with the presence of mini's sister there. She showed up about an hour into the night and was immensely supportive.
Our bishop has visited twice, and put me in touch with a couple of people out of state in somewhat similar circumstances, for support and to exchange ideas.
I was able to watch the CES fireside on the computer late one night. It was profound, and soaked into my soul like rainwater on a thirsty plain. There have been times when on my knees I have echoed Joseph Smith's words - - - "Oh, God, where art thou?" Through everything, I have never doubted the Lord's power nor his love for me, only my ability to endure and to accept His will. Heartfelt thank-yous to all who kept us in your prayers. Those prayers were answered. We are once again on our feet, with more courage for storms to come.

Welcome back, Michaela . We've wondered how you were doing, hoping you & Ryan & Aaron were able to feel the Lord's love for you. I have no concept of what you have been going through, but my prayers have been for Heavenly Father to be aware of your needs & do what He knows is best for you. I truly have no idea what else to pray for on your behalf.
The fireside with Elder Holland was a blessing, wasn't it? Who among has not tried to endure faithfully, then had some kind of adversity that they thought would finally do them in? Those writings of Joseph Smith are among my favorites. I know he was a true prophet partly because of what he was willing to be subjected to for his testimony & for the Saints. No self-serving charlatan would have sat there in Liberty Jail eating who-knows-what the jailers were reputed to have offered him, worrying about his family out in the cold Missouri winter, & continued to defend a false testimony. I am grateful for his love for us & for the Lord, & the words of comfort & reassurance that the Lord gave him to share with us.

Well, today I have my 3 month appointment with my oncologist. Need to get some sleep. We have to give our color choice to the painter in the morning and meet with our landlord to get the contract signed. Scary stuff! V.

Hmmm, the Porch is vacant, except for Hound & Annabelle snoozing away. I saw Pepper, Punkin, & Ivie playing in the woods nearby, & Mr. Clowers left a note that he "borrowed" Dreyfuss to help with his flock. Dreyfuss always comes back happy, so he probably eats well at the Clowers place too.
V is with either the oncologist (prayers for you, V) or the painter. I'll mix up a chef's salad & put it in the fridge for when she gets back, or anyone else drops in. Let's see, how about mixed greens, garbanzos, ham, grape tomatoes, olives, sliced cucumbers & mushrooms, & a few broccolli flowers. I'll leave croutons, grated cheese, chopped hard-boiled eggs, & dressing separate, so everyone can add them fresh.
I have some errands to do, so it looks like you critters are on your own for awhile. I'll leave some water & dry food out for you, & you can have something warm when one of us gets back.

Curelom's been here! There's salad, yum! I fell asleep and when I awoke dd1 had finally gotten off the computer. So, here I am, early in the morning.
Thank you, Porch family for the loving thoughts and prayers. Today began with getting the initial sales agreement signed and delivere into the hands of the bank. The painter never showed. I think he and our landlord weren't on the same page as to when work is to begin. Then a short nap before going out to my appointment.
The bloodwork #s looked good. We are doing a CTscan in the next few weeks. I am still needing to see a urologist and have some work to do to get the right referal. He is happy with my weight gain. I am not. I wanted to stay closer to 170 but my body is settling at 180. My port-a-cath can come out! Yea!!!!!!!! It is supposed to be a simple, no anesthesia, proceedure. Only a local.
Well, little ones, I think I can find the food and heat some up for you as I see EVERYONE is awake. I am going to curl up in my corner now and try for some sleep! V.

Wednesday was good. I got a lot accomplished, including some obnoxious bureacratic paperwork for dd2's SSI application. We gave one or two smart alecky answers because some of the questions just weren't applicable or totally ridiculous.

V, I'm happy for the good things happening in your life. I'm so glad that you are getting stronger and that you are going to get your cath out. I have only two experiences with catheters and they were NOT FUN! One was after surgery and I counted the hours until it came out. Whew!
I'm happy for you, too, that you are going to be buying the place you've been renting. The great thing about having your own place is that you can pound a nail in the wall wherever you choose without having to worry about getting someone's permission. What color paint did you choose?

Curelom, I enjoyed your thoughts on Joseph Smith. He was a great prophet. I have come to understand and respect him more with each passing season of my life. And some believe that we are not Christian? How many among the kingdoms of Christianity would endure the hardships and privations that Joseph Smith endured in defense of the word and work of the Lord Jesus Christ? That is his testimony.
Thanks for the wonderful, HEALTHY salad. When crisis hits here, we eat whatever. Salad is just what my body needs. I did have to laugh today though. Yesterday my visiting teachers came. They asked me how my month had been and I told them. When I finished, they asked in all sincerity what they could do to help. I thought for about two seconds, then chirped, "Make cookies!" We all laughed, but today two plates of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies showed up at my door. Posts: 103 | Registered: Feb 2008

Ummm, oooo, mph,? Oh, Michaela has been here! I am sorry I didn't hear her come in.
The mediport is the piece they put in my chest so that chemo could be administered through it instead of risking blown veins. It is in just the place to be annoying now that I am driving as it is over the left breast. I remember the catheters after the surgery, though, so I do relate to the desire for having them gone. I suspicion that the cath might be the cause of some of my urological problems. Just don't know!
Well, I have hemmed the sleeves and neckline of my t-tunic. Also the bottom pinned before going to sleep. I think I shall go back to sleep. I wonder if Michaela left any of those wonderful cookies here? Wasn't it nice of her VTs to do that? V.

* Cackles hilariously at V's experience *
Let's hope it doesn't irk some professional pencil pusher so much that he/she/it turns down the application.
I'm delighted at your health progress & also that you're moving closer to owning the house. I bet the stress level will calm down as all those things get closer to being settled. I'll put you on the prayer roll again next time (also the Michah-MiMi family, OK?)
Don't let the critters take advantage of you. They are not starving, despite their persuasive acts. I've been catching up here. You all have been in my thoughts even when I am away. If I am not around, please send me updates. My email sometimes acts up but it eventually lets me download evertying even if it takes a few days. I'm working from home. I have a different work computer for that and a second phone line too. I am not online on my home computer that often as I work more hours.
I just remembered that I promised to bring sweet corn for everyone when it was harvest time. I have brought plenty fresh from the fields. You want to eat it as fresh as possible.
I had a strange craving for pop tarts today too. I don't eat them anymore but they sounded real good to me. So I brought some to share.
I see that my friends here have had some sore trials. I knew Ryan was having problems on my last visit and he had been in my thoughts. I am glad to hear that he was able to sleep well and I hope he gets the right meds.
V, I am glad that your one numbers were good. I hope you keep doing better and better. And I can understand why your doctor was happy about a little weight gain. It is good to hear that the transportation for your daughter is finally working out for you.
Hello, Curelom! I know you don't talk about your back much but I think of you and hope you are okay as well.
Hey Quid! Hope this finds you doing well!
Hello to KQ and JD!
Hey Nita and Patty Blue!
Hello Polly!
Love to all including anybody that I missed saying.
I don't think I mentioned MiMi yet. I read that you daughter was baptized. My friends daughter was baptized in July. I hope that your daughter can treasure the memory as she grows older. I am glad to know the contrast of being a convert. I know that children can be sensitive to feelings of the Holy Spirit and blessings from God at a young age too. At seven, I had my First Communion. While I don't think I was very religious as at that age, it was a special time for me as it was considered an important right of passage in the Catholic faith. And my mom got me everything new.
Please keep in touch with me. If I don't have your email, please send it to me.
Love to all!

I just got back from the General RS meeting broadcasr. It was wonderful. The messages were perfect. Sister Beck's opening message exhorting us to greater efforts in building the Kingdom of God & President Uchtdorf's about counteracting feelings of inadequacy or being overwhelmed were like bookends. It was almost like she was setting us up by telling us what great expectations Heavenly Father has of us, so he could then assure us that if we are doing all we can, our Father is pleased & we should not feel that we don't measure up.
Hi Abby, it's nice to see you here, & thanks for greeting everyone personally. . My back isn't entirely painless, & I'm still not sure exactly what it's doing. But it's just enough discomfort to notice occasionally, & I try to keep it exercised & stretched so it doesn't have a chance to stiffen up. Not enough to bother consulting the doctor again. And no sense in talking about it--that won't make it not hurt, & it's so trivial compared to other people's challenges.
Just looked in on Meadowbee's blog, & she sounds happy. I don't know her personally, but the tone of her posts is uplifting. We all hope she's doing well.
<hug> reserved for Meadowbee in case you drop by here incognito.
OK, Annabelle, I know you need some TLC. V isn't here yet, so let's sit out here where we can watch the fog. What a cozy domestic scene. Hound & Pepper are asleep in the corner by the stove, & Punkin is outside looking for bats. Ivie & Dreyfuss are watching "Homeward Bound II," where the pets get loose at the airport & end up roaming around San Francisco being threatened by all kinds of animal thugs. The critters are being such angels tonight, I'll reward them with warm food & add some real chicken.

What a day! I see on another thread that Sparky had a very emotional day! Must have been something in the air! I taught SS today but had a bad start, a decent lesson and then ended the lesson badly as I wasn't able to finish preparing!
I was not called by our missionaries to let me know the people we started picking up weren't coming to church anymore. She let her grandson get baptised and then got "offended" by a "supposed" racially motivated look. I came back home to see if the printer would finally spit out the lesson. It did and off to church late we went. Got there to find a new sister in the ward outside feeling very hurt. Long and short being had to have a discussion with one of my missionaries. Hopefully the little birthday dinner and gathering being prepared for her made her day better.
Thursday is transfer day and I will be sad to see Elder Bewley leave.
I'll be back later to curl up for the night! V.

Oh, dear . It looks like several people have not had their best days today. People are feeling a bit beat up. Let's relax & "chill out" & end the Sabbath in a relaxing way. We can all use a good rest.
What is a "racially motivated look"? How can you distinguish it from a plain old everyday dirty look?
Sigh. We just have to do the best we can & let the Lord worry about the stuff that's beyond us.
Annabelle, V will be back later. Meanwhile, you can come over here with me. Let's read a few Psalms to soothe our spirits. There must really be a "bad moon on the rise." All the pets have come in, even Dreyfuss. Punkin is still studying the bats, but tonight she's in the tree right next to the Porch. She'll come running for cover as soon as one of them dive-bombs her.
I made some hot honey lemonade & it's on the stove staying warm if anyone wants a "nightcap."

How many people are aware that Canada has a Hurricane Center? (Oops, make that Centre)
We usually associate hurricanes with the lower latitudes, but New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, & Maine were hit by Hurricane Kyle. I hope any of our friends & neighbors in those areas are OK.
I remember John Steinbeck writing in "Travels With Charley" about a hurricane that slammed into Long Island where he lived, just as he was packing & preparing to leave on his epic road trip in his custom-built camper (in the 1960s, the idea of a house on a pickup truck bed was totally novel).

Down, Pepper! We don't jump on visitors until we know they don't mind. Punkin, are your claws in? We don't want to scare prospective Porchupines away.
"Hi, can I join in?"
Welcome to the Porch! You are now on Mt. Nauvoo. A fine Nauvoodle citizen named Michaela built the Cabin & the Porch on the quiet side of town so folks could get away from the downtown crowds, hustle & bustle, street lights, traffic, & even occasional mild road rage. We come here to relax, visit with other Porchupines, enjoy nature, play with our pets, read our scriptures or do other quiet activities. People come here when they need a rest or some cheering up. Many of us often sleep here.
V should be here soon; you can tell because Annabelle, her favorite feline pal, is starting to look anxious.
There's always food, potluck style (everyone just brings what they feel like making, or maybe last night's leftovers). In fact, I brought a pot of chili (made with roast pork, not beef) & mildly spicy. There's grated cheese, onions, & tortilla chips. Since we need a balance diet, I also brought a green salad.
In a few weeks we'll move up the hill to the Cabin, where we spend the winter. There are bedrooms, fireplaces, & all the niceties we need for a cozy hibernation.
Oh....the other pets are Hound (basset), Dreyfuss (sheep dog), & Ivie (black & white cat). You can meet them later. We also have Parrot, but he just drops by occasionally.
We have one neighbor, Clifton Clowers, who lives over the mountain on Wolverton Ridge. He's alone since his daughter eloped with a city boy, but she & her family come to visit. They're good neighbors, with a flock of sheep, & our Dreyfuss helps them out a lot.
That's probably more than you ever wanted to know about the Porch. But now you can decide if you really want to live here, or at least visit often. So put up your feet, relax, &....oh, look, here comes Ivie. She is a good judge of people; she was abused & we adopted her from the shelter. You must be a good Porchupine candidate.
