KQ, it would absolutley be horrible if you didn't treat yourself to icecream!
What a very nice day! Curelom, let me help you rinse off the puppies. I've been wet more than once today anyway and I have dry clothes to change into.
The Porch is a nice place to be this evening! I think I'll just sit back and enjoy the night sounds. V.

It was warm enough for the beach here--but we Northern Californians may have different standards from our Southern neighbors. For us, if it's warm enough for ice cream, it's beach weather!
KQ, I hope you treated yourself. What your kids don't see won't bother them, & it isn't as though you were violating the Word of Wisdom behind their backs. I'm sure they get their quota of ice cream!
Thanks for the help, V. The pooches are a handful when we want to wash all of them at once. In this weather, the cats also like to run wild in the water & sand, so they need a bath too. Hound is pretty mellow, but Pepper can get frisky, & we never know what Punkin might do. Dreyfuss is a big help keeping everyone under control.
OK, now everyone is clean & wrapped in towels. Maybe they'll relax & let us read, write, sew, or just enjoy the peaceful evening for awhile. Here's a pitcher of strawberry limeade to keep us cool.

Yum! Strawberry limeade, a treat for after cleaning animals. Thanks, Curelom! Well, the critters have all settled in. Something about the salt air and excercise always makes me tired so I am going to say goodnight! well all! V. (move Annabelle over to make room)

Whew. It's been another hot day here. It's time we started to cool off & inch our way toward winter. But it still feels like summer here.
* Gets out book of murder mysteries to take to the wading pool. *
I can just slouch down to neck level & still be able to read. Oh, let me pour a glass of that strawberry limeade to take with me. . V should be here any minute & I left plenty for her.
Punkin, you'll have to stay in the other pool. I got this second one so we wouldn't have to keep cleaning it out when you critters leave your fur & feathers behind. Posts: 13223 | Registered: Apr 2005

Curelom? Thanks for the limeade. Anothere glass to refresh! It's still warm here on the southeast coast as well. The nights are cooler though.
Well, I finally seasoned my dutch oven today! Lots of smoke. I should have used the fire when my next door neighbor was burning wood. Lots of smoke! Did I say that already? We are having a lesson in dutch oven cooking tomorrow with our bishop as instructor. We are going to also have use of a dry pack type vacuum canner. We aren't going to have a craft so I plan on taking an unfinished project with me.
I see Curelom in the pool! I think I'll just sit here with the critters and listen to the night sounds. V.

I think Curelom came out of the pool while I was resting my eyes. I can see that she didn't fall asleep there. I think I will cuddle up with our sweet Annabelle for the night! Sweet dreams, one and all! V.

It cooled off a lot so I got out of the pool & dried off, gave the pets some TLC, & decided to join you & enjoy the crickets & owls serenading us.
We may have to send our critters out again on a search & rescue operation. A zoo in Texas is missing two residents, possibly abducted: a camel & a pony that are best friends. I actually hope they solve this before our critters' services are needed, because they still need some rest. They've had a busy summer, especially Dreyfuss, with the hurricanes & that wayward sheep that ended up on the freeway.
Your Dutch oven class sounds great. I wish I could go, because I'd love to learn more about Dutch oven cooking.
Tomorrow we're working on Prop. 8 again. It's been a long haul & we just have to keep going a little over two weeks more to finish what we started. On election day, we'll get updates from polling places & call with reminders to people that we've already determined to be likely or certain yes votes. Quite a few of us are probably going to totally crash on Nov. 5.
Yes, Ivie, it's OK for you to sit up here. No, I don't have anything to eat. The chef has gone off duty & the kitchen is closed for the night. But I'll pour a sip of strawberry limeade in a saucer & you can try it. Do you want to read scriptures with me? How about a couple of parables? They have animals in them who teach us gospel principles.

Yes, the Porch does creek once in awhile and did I see PF peeking through the bushes? Ya know, Pink, if you'd come by more often you'd know a lot of things happen at the Porch!
What a good day! The food was good and the fellowship even better! I feel more confident about using my dutch oven. I would like to get one or two more smaller ones. V.

This is really weird. The ADD REPLY function seems to work at the moment but I still get the error message when I try to go back to past pages.
As long as I got in this time, I'm going to grab some of our food, pet supplies, books, & odds & ends, & take them to the Cabin. I know V managed to get the critters up there. Thanks, V! It's still Porch weather, but we can leave the doors or windows open, or sleep on the Cabin deck.
* Loads up little red wagon & starts up the Cabin path. Almost trips over a fallen tree. *
Thank goodness there's still some moonlight. Look, there's Dreyfuss, & Punkin is right behind. Maybe V sent them down to meet me.

* Ivie marches right up to the Porch as if nothing had ever gone awry. *
Hmmm. Curious & curiouser. Yes, it does seem the paths have been cleared to the Porch.
Yesterday was weird. Sometimes I could get here, sometimes not. Other times I could take a back path to the Porch, like the Nephite warriors sneaking past the drunken sentinels after bar closing time. And then I'd try to retrace my steps & find the path closed off. It was like the Porch was floating in & out of the Twilight Zone!
Is it back now, permanently retrofitted so it won't collapse again?
The critters are all here, & there's a bottle of ketchup out on the table, which tells me KetchupQueen came by & probably had lunch. I'll put it in the fridge to stay fresh. I see V's sewing in the chair by the side where the sun comes in. But there isn't any sun now; it has been foggy all day here & the sun has not made an appearance at all.
I brought oxtail stew. Has anyone not had oxtails? They are not literally from oxen, but from beef cattle, & oxtail is a traditional name. Like most people, I think of oxen as a useful domestic animal, if not very exciting, & I kinda like them. Until I knew better, I used to think it was wasteful & cruel that they might be raised only to harvest their tails for meat! Now I really like oxtails.
They take a bit of cooking, but they make a hearty, flavorful stew or soup for cool days. There isn't much fat, but I still don't need extra broth for stew. (For soup, some beef broth helps). I just use the cooking stock, potatoes, carrots, boiler onions, celery, a couple of garlic cloves, a couple of Roma tomatoes to add color & flavor, & a dash of S&P.
I see the pets eyeballing the pot. The aroma has caught their attention. You critters are lucky. I had some extrta beef bones & I made some broth to add to your food. * Puts pot on back of stove & covers it. *
* Moves chair to where I can relax & read, look at the woods & the fog, hear the bears rooting around & building up their fat layer for a long winter's sleep, & enjoy the other small dramas of nature. *

Okay, yesterday was just tooo scary! I am so glad to be back on the Porch with the animals. I left most of the stuff Curelom took up to the Cabin up there since it really is getting to be time to move anyway! I had to really go around the world to find the Cabin!
I have one or two things to finish sewing, then ironing and will be done with garb for the moment. Next I will be working on a Viking treasure necklace for an Art/Sci competition. I have been kinda planning it. Can't do anything though until I can get the glass beads on Friday.
I think I am ready to curl up in my corner. I want to enjoy the Porch for just a little while longer. V.

Hello, Porchupines! It does feel like things are back to normal, but maybe saving the entire history isn't such a bad idea. It would be like putting your genealogy on several media & storing them in different places in case a fire consumes your house with all your papers & photos, a lightning bolt fries your computer, an asteroid hits your bank & wipes out your safety deposit box, & you get amnesia & forget every item you ever put on PAF. Somewhere, a copy would survive.
Yesterday the Porch had 138 pages. Were some of the timbers removed? I'll have to go back a few pages & try to reconstruct things in my mind & see if I can spot any missing parts.
Let's hope that doesn't weaken the Porch.
Hi, Punkin . Are you looking for something to eat? No, I was just asking, since that seems to be your main occupation. OK, let's go for a walk in the woods & count butterflies. Posts: 13223 | Registered: Apr 2005

Hi to all! I hope that I don't lose access to my home computer. I will be back when I can if that happens.
I think I know of a blog for Dutch ovens that I will try to post here for V.
MiMi, hello to you. I went to your blog not to long ago and saw the cute family reuinion pictures as well as others. We are planning on getting matching outfits for my two nieces and my great-step nephew for Christmas pictures. Posts: 3434 | Registered: Feb 2005

Hi, rayb--thanks for the welcome back. Shall we have a joint Porch-Fortress celebration?
Did you put the fruitcakes there? And how old are they? They'd better be real antiques, because those give the best support. Just like adobe, they have to set up & dry out for a period of time.
Abby, don't move those fruitcakes. They are what's holding up the Porch. If you want a snack, I'll get a brick & some wood for you.
I'll put V's sewing stuff away so the critters won't tangle it all up or stick themselves with her needles.
I had some oxtail stew for dinner, & now I'll have my solo FHE. I'm going to read from "Preach My Gospel" & try to think of ways I can create more missionary opportunities, where I can do better.

OK, something mysterious is happening. Now the Porch hs dropped another page. I'm making note that there are 133 pages & 5312 posts.
Is someone going back & deleting some of their old posts in an effort to lighten the Porch? Let's not try to make the museum more efficient by throwing Rembrandts in the garbage can.
I wonder how our hostess would feel about having the Porch closed to through traffic & turned into a historic site, to avoid a catastrophe like we almost had over the weekend, & then building a Porch Annex. Michaela?

Oh, that's the pits, BatmanBeatles. Have some pistachio ice cream, relax in one of these comfy Porch chairs, & take it easy for a day or two. We'll bring other snacks up here, & the Bookmobile is scheduled to come tomorrow.
And the critters will all be here if you need a sympathetic, fuzzy ear.

Oh, my! There's been quite a few visitors to the Porch! I should be asleep but decided to visit here since dd1 actually went to bed at a reasonable time. I woke up hungry so got a glass of milk and came to Nauvoo!
Abby, thanks for the suggestions for reading! I really enjoyed visiting with you via the landline! You gave me a lot to think about! There was a sweet spirit about you!
Well, I think I need to curl back up in my corner and get some sleep! No sewing tonight! I found my Gameboy and played Dr. Mario for awhile. all! V.

V., it was so great to talk to you as well. I know you gave your phone number ages ago regarding my possible learning disability that you have information about. My parents usually do not give permission for me to call my online friends. This even included a friend who was Relief Society President. Well, they see things on t.v. and all so they don't take things at face value. I understood their protection. I knew that you had met others here at Nauvoo. Of course, there are others that I would love to talk to on the porch. V., your loving concern for others resonated loud and clear. Posts: 3434 | Registered: Feb 2005

OK, now the Porch is down to 5,276 posts & 132 pages. Something strange is definitely happening. If someone is pulling timbers out of the Porch to use for firewood or to build something else, please stop before it really collapses.
It's another warm day on my side of the Porch, so I am going to curl up with a frosty glass of lemonade. The Cabin can wait. With the sunny days dwindling as we move toward winter, I'm going to enjoy them while I can.
* Spies someone peeking at us *
Must be PF checking out the pool. Come on over & have some lemonade & dunk your feet. It's just a kiddie wading pool, but it's nice & cool. Not to worry, the pets have their own pool.

Dear PF! We enjoyed your brief visit but understand that the Porch isn't everyone's "cuppa"!
This is the second week of our new schedule. It is gonna take some time to get used to going to Aquatic Therapy on Wednesdays instead of Fridays.
My rw kitty is about to start helping dd1 stuff ghosties with the shredded paper! Life is fun with critters around! V.

It's a slow day on the Porch. Are people afraid we might overload it again & make it collapse?
A lot of our neighbors are having challenges. I wish we could do something for all of them, but sometimes prayers & good wishes are all we can offer.
Hi, Annabelle. You look lonesome. I know, all the other critters are asleep & V hasn't been here tonight. What would you like, a snack or TLC? OK, I think we can manage some of each. Posts: 13223 | Registered: Apr 2005

Aww, missed V again. <waves to V who is sound asleep> .
*Annabelle opens one eye, makes sure who it is sneaking onto the Porch this late, & goes back to sleep next to V. *
It sure has been quiet for a couple of days. I hope people realize the Porch is still standing & seems structurally safe. I brought breakfast fixings, but you may have to DIY because I'll be going out early. Everything is in the fridge ready to go: spicy chicken-artichoke sausages, pancake batter, strawberry jam, grapefruit marmalade, & honeydew melon.
OK, Ivie, I see you stirring. What are you doing awake this late? Come on over here for some TLC before we go <zzzz>.

So, I just finished washing out a car seat. Bridget got carsick (doesn't usually happen, but the combination of an empty stomach followed by gulping a cup of juice, reading in the car, stop and go traffic, and falling asleep did it) and of course we have one of the few seats on the market that doesn't have removable harness straps (or I'd replace them with our spare's straps and order a replacement for the spare.) Since you can't immerse car seat harnesses, I was wiping with a damp cloth for about an hour to get the vomit smell out.
At least we got front-loader washers put in a few months ago so unlike last time she made a huge mess, I didn't have to hand-wash the cover. (They're rather delicate and are known to fall apart in top-loaders even on the "hand wash" cycle because of the agitators. The front loader doesn't have agitators so the gentle cycle will do fine there.)
After six months of trying, we are finally getting her broken tooth extracted. We're paying for the anesthesia out of pocket (unless we can get it approved) so she doesn't have to wait another 6 months on the waiting list for anesthesia done at an in-network hospital. She's in constant pain and she has an abcess now (so she'll be on antibiotics until the extraction in a couple of weeks.) But this was the first positive experience we've had with the kids at a dentist in a year. And they've only been going for a year.
On a happier note, we've decided to sponsor a child through Children International. He is so sweet looking. He is seven, lives in the Philippines, and has a cleft lip. (I asked for a child with a craniofacial disorder because it is a cause particularly close to my heart.) He and his parents and his four brothers and sisters live in a two-room shack with no running water (they get it from their neighbor's faucet) and a community latrine.
