Jana, that was my first reaction when I started reading your post, until I read on. You almost gave me a heart attack. You do realize, don't you, what we usually assume when we hear or read that someone "has passed."
Congratulations to your fine young scholars & best wishes for their future studies. Your whole family has been in my prayers (& prayers of my fellow temple patrons). Posts: 13218 | Registered: Apr 2005

I've been lurking and napping alot. I'll make sure food dishes are full an the water dishes taken care of. Dh has been off for 4 days so we've had an interesting weekend. We did go to the zoo for a little while. Only did one loop but have a year's worth of membership so we can go as often as we want.
Well, critters are all taken care of. I see Punkin needs just a little more time outside so I will sit with her for awhile. We won't be long for settling in. Night all! V.

I spent some time with the critters and slept in a dark corner. You probably didn't see me and I didn't leave a note, although in retrospect, I probably should have. We went out to do some shopping and that wore me out - still not recovered. The heat is really doing me in.

I've been spending a great deal of my online time on pinterest. Many of the board members for Festival of trees have had a hard time trying to figure out what to bring in for Sweet Shoppe. All foods coming in have to be made in Board of Health kitchens. That limits some things you can bring, but even those with the kitchen access seem to be struggling with what to bring in if we limit how many cookies and popcorn brought in (we already have companies donating those and if half the board members bring it in then there is an over abundance). So I've been adding things to my Pinterest FOT Sweet Shoppe board. If that can't get some kind of ideas from that I don't know how to help them much further.

So, Wednesday was a really fun day! First, I got to the clinic and discovered my counselor did a ditzy thing and scheduled me for next Wed. Fortunately, I had things to do in the building anyway. I got to see my doc and find out exactly when graduation for the residents is. I also have the application for my handicap placard so I plan on getting license plate for the car so I don't have to worry about making sure the placard is up for both dd2 and I.
I went to the river for awhile and let the energy flow through me. It really helped. The mullet were jumping and I think I saw a manatee or two. The girls cooked dinner tonight which was nice. Missing adopted showed up this evening as well. Made the evening better.
Too many "til we meet again" moments coming up but I am a tough wife to retired Navy. I can handle this.
I am headed to sleep! Night all! V.

I've been off in a quiet corner, working on my cross-stitchl called "Stroke of Midnight". It's all backstitch now, but I am willing to bet I am going to use an entire skein of grey just to outline all the stonework, marble and masonry in it. And then the color suggested for outlining the gold in her dress is too light, so I had to pick it all out and now figure out another shade for that. My goal is to have it done by the end of the month. And The Porch is a perfect place to rest and do that. And get away from the heat. It's been triple digits (Fahrenheit, obviously) for a week now.
ETA: V, I miss seeing manatees. Could you leave the door open so I can visit them, too?

Crow girl, I think I am in snackbag heaven, and David got to stock his new home with fancy nuts...which he thinks are the best he EVER had (Good thing there are 2:)
I got all distracted with two graduates, one immediate house move, and a few hours of dry weather to get the early May chores done in the garden ( yeah, sad it is half June...but maybe we will have a mild Fall?)
Sigh...but Papa is working LONG LONG hours.

Crowgirl, close your eyes and go to a place on our base called Manatee Cove. The day is windy and the water a little angry. However, the mullet are jumping and moving into the cove. Then there are grey humps appearing just barely above the water. There's rain coming and the air feels fresh and smells of what is ahead. The door will stay open and you are welcome any time. My gift from one retired military wife to an awesome online friend! V.

Jana, I'm glad the package arrived, and that everyone enjoyed the pistachios. When you told me how much you have to pay for them, I could not help myself; I had to share.
Speaking of sharing, V., thank you for that wonderful description. I feel much better.
The cross stitch is going slowly, but surely. I can't wait to show it to you all when it's finished.

I finished one of my goals yesterday! Reading the entire standard works again! Well, minus the bible dictionary, topical guide etc, but it is including the introductions and things like that.
I noticed the Education Week schedule was up last night and I'm so excited - several of the classes are about the archaeology around Christ's life. Classes like "archaeology and Jesus' First Days In Jerusalem: Jerusalem at the time of Christ". This is a lot of what I had in mind when preparing to some day go to Israel!

V, maybe you could send some virtual manatees over. I don't think my part of the ocean is warm enough. But I just saw a stray cat dash through the dark. It wasn't one of ours, but I hope it found a safe place to hole up. I put out a dish of water & a few Pounce's for it. Stray cats & dogs have a rough life.

Tonight I have a full freezer and a heavy heart. One down side to living in what my bishopric calls a "transitional" ward is saying goodbye to so many wonderful people. My home teacher and his family are in the final stages of packing to head to Denver. We sang to the kids in primary and I got big hugs from each of them. Then later, mom came by with a big bag full of frozen food that would never survive the drive west. This farewell is the hardest yet, but I think the Bug is taking it even harder than I am since she's not even home to say goodbye in person.

I remember living in Madison. Our ward was like a ghost town during the summer when the students went home and the post docs did their summer thing. Like a tide in and out every season. We weren't a student ward, just the ward that had the most members from Eagle Heights and student housing. I know that "goodbye, good luck"feeling all too well.
We are surviving rites of passages here as well. Else graduated Seminary with honors this weekend- she followed the course faithfully for 5 years...and I will be released next week.
Today the "boys" are taking their mothers to see their new home in Nijmegen. I haven't met Harm's mom before. It sorta feels like meeting the in-laws in a way- the boys might be roommates for many year--they both are medical students.
Monday Sweetpea and I are going to London to celebrate her 18th, her graduation and to distract her from the LONG wait until the 16th when we will know the direction of her education for the next 5 years and beyond...
Himself will be on the news again tonight. This time as the Education Director of the Chemistry Department. For the first time in the history of the university system, they are bestowing scholarships here. It is a very big deal. The students here traditionally attend the U for minimal fees and become employees of the University as grad students. The salaries and grants have been frozen or cut, (so the most intelligent students are being penalized for being smart. Insert disgusted rant here) Our government is not smart. So, to attract new blood into chemistry, some bright minds have decided to support a scholarship program. This has doubled Himself's work load and required a lot of extra emailing and fussing around this weekend- when he should have been focussed on Else. ( meh.)
Two graduations this week and we need to pack Pops for two conferences ( I will meet him at the airport with fresh undies as he switches planes from one country to another) SweetPea and I have to pack, David needs to stow whatever he wants stored in the loft and he need to organize his camp stuff for his week with his girlies in the woods.
Can I just say I am a bit overwhelmed...

This stupid storm was supposed to go West!!!!!
I'm glad I don't have anywhere to be until Wednesday. I don't like driving anyway and rain makes me nervous.
I'm curling up with a book for the night! Will be thinking good and loving thoughts for one and all! V.

V., I don't think I've seen a manatee in person before, so thank you for that.
yungmom, those classes sound fantastic. If I were in the vicinity, I'd love to take those with you. You might want to read James Michener's The Source - it's a historical novel written about Israel that, for me, made so many things about the culture and the history of Israel come alive for me. And I walked away with a better understanding of the Bible since the book helped put things into context that I could understand. And it's a well written book, too, as a bonus. My two year old Toshiba notebook was starting to die on me - the DVD player didn't work, nor did the smart card reader. The USB ports started giving me problems. The hard drives started corrupting. Then the headphone jack went. Lots of little failures for an only-two-years-old computer. So I've taken over Fahim's old Macbook Pro and I need to learn how to use a Mac again, not that I was ever really proficient at using it like I am with Windows.
But I have a much larger hard drive now and more than double the effective RAM, so theoretically I should have a faster less kludgy experience.
Except that I don't like change when it means that I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE HECK I'M DOING OR WHERE TO FIND THINGS! Ack!

Chocolate--and lots of it--coming right up.
While I'm at it, I'm bringing in a dirt cake, with gummi worms, served in a flower pot. CrowDaughter wanted this for her birthday; I think we're in the third year running.
Something more substantial? Here's The Big Sandwich--birthday dinner for CrowChildren since 2004. Round loaf of bread, cut horizontally in 5 pieces. Layer 1--horseradish sauce and roast beef. Layer 2--mustard, ham, turkey and Swiss cheese. Layer 3--mayonnaise or Ranch dressing, bacon and tomatoes. Layer 4--onion and Cheddar cheese. Put top of bread on, baste a mixture of 1/2 stick butter, 1 T sesame seeds, and 1/2t onion powder. Loosely tent with foil, place in 400F/200C oven for 15-20 minutes, and eat. Last year, I made one without the ham and bacon for CrowSon's Muslim and Jewish friends, and they raved just as much as the others. Please, take a knife and saw yourself a piece.
Quid, I kind of feel your pain, but in reverse. I have a new job, and I have to try to remember all the Microsoft stuff after dealing with Macs for the past several years. Good luck.

Dirt cake with gummi bears I will take. And gladly.
And that massive sandwich? Sounds absolutely fantastic! As a side note, we can get turkey ham here in Singapore that's so close to the taste and texture of pig ham that I would not be able to tell them apart. Seriously that close. But completely halal. Fahim and I enjoyed it. The turkey bacon, though, is a complete fail. Not even remotely close. Weird how they can replicate one so easily but not the other.
And I feel your pain, Crowgirl. It's never easy switching from one OS to another. I had a bit of an adjustment period when I switched back to Windows. This is now my third time on a Mac - first time was back around 1990, so they were hardly that good back then. Anyway, sucks to have to switch back and forth. But this will be easier on the hubs since he won't have to provide me with tech support on a Windows machine when he uses Mac. Posts: 4447 | Registered: Apr 2003

Hey V, are you reduced to having to use a boat to get out of your neighborhood?
I am not exaggerating -- Debby has been really mild as far as tropical storms go, with hardly any wind damage, but she has been so wet and moved so slowly that we are deluged. I have a few facebook friends in town who have posted pictures of themselves in the middle of the street with water up to their knees, or literally in canoes paddling in and out of their house. Fortunately mine is high and (relatively) dry, has never flooded, although the road to the school often floods. I haven't had to go over there this week, wonder what it looks like.
We've officially set a new record: highest two-day rainfall ever in our town since recorded history began in 1871, with 12.56 inches in the past two days. They're calling this a 100 year flood - you know, the kind they try to get you to buy insurance for. "Even if it hasn't flooded in your neighborhood for 100 years, you should still have it, you never know." For some people, this is that flood. (Then there are those neighborhoods that flood with every storm and they just keep canoes and paddles in their backyard on a regular basis. How could anyone buy a house there?)
And I hear there are wildfires out west -- we really should coordinate this weather a little better, I think!

JD, I have been blessed. We are on the high side of a stream so no flooding close to the house. However, some of my friends here and in Middleburg have issues. There was a note on my Shire list that one of our friends living in a trailer is on an island. He's on oxygen so I hope they are okay.
I think about all our Nauvoodles out west and pray that they are okay. I would gladly send some of this rain their way.
I answered my phone yesterday with, "Noah's Arc, we have room for two more." Turned out to be my home teacher checking on me. Gave him a great laugh.
If I go into a funk just place the chocolate where I can reach it. Btw, there is a huge bowl of different Hershey's Kisses and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Chocolate always helps. I am saying goodby to an awesome doc. He graduates Friday and will be stationed in Buford, SC. I get to break in another second year resident.
Then my fighter leaves for Galveston on the 14th of July. At least it isn't the middle of the Pacific Ocean this time. Also, we are not releasing each other. He is still my fighter and I am still his consort. I am giving him a compass so that he will always know where east is. So, when they say to salute the one who inspires you, he will always know where east is. I don't think his girlfriend is really interested in being a part of his medieval life.
Okay, I need to go back to sleep for a few hours. Everyone stay safe and dry. V.

A page turned and I am thankful to be on the high side of the land and very glad none of my friends lost property or life.
For anyone who hasn't seen a manatee, look them up. They are very gentle creatures. They move very slowly and gracefully. Ancient mariners thought they were mermaids.

Tonight(Thurs.) I am teaching a non-member group a class in emergency preparedness. I wish we had done it earlier but didn't realize Beryl and Debbie had it out for us. The American Red Cross and FEMA were most helpful. I also had a list from church that our person printed out for me without the church's name on it.
I need to dig out my backpack to show everyone my kit. While I have it out I will try on the clothes. I challenge each of you to do the same. I'd hate to hear that any of you went without cause clothes were too small or way too big. Love to all! V.

I'm having more and more problems with my vision. I had to decrease screen resolution on my computer and still have to up the font size. I have problems focusing, and not just sometimes, but nearly all the time now. It's amazing how fast it went downhill in that respect - I've had cataracts for, um, 8 years and while they meant more photosensitivity, they didn't really affect my vision all that much until a couple of months ago.
Methinks it's time for me to start the process to get cataract surgery.

Class went well! I realized how out of date my 72 hour kit is and will be working on getting it back up to standards. I don't have supplies for my stoma in my kit and need to trade out feminine pads for the other. I haven't tried the clothes on either.
It was great to talk about something I have grown up knowing along with what the church has taught. I felt very comfortable doing this class.
I need to get some sleep. I have to be up early but woke up hungry. Now that things have settled it's time to turn the lights out. Night all! V.

V, I'm glad everything went well. We are slowly rotating the food out of our 72 hour kits. I just realized I don't have clothing in ours anymore. Oops. Better fix that one. It's hard with girls that grow so fast, and are as tough as their big brother. CrowBaby should be on her fourth pair of shoes since New Years Day--and her shoe size has stayed the same--but with it being summer, we've kind of let it go by the wayside.
Quid, I'm sorry to hear about your vision. Will being in Singapore make it more difficult for you to get surgery? ETA: How much longer will you be there?
posted
We fly back to Sri Lanka tomorrow. I can get surgery in either country, but it'll be cheaper in Sri Lanka. What I don't know yet is whether or not I can get the kind of lenses where you don't need glasses at all after surgery - that's my first preference. If I were 70 and having cataract surgery, it wouldn't matter as much, I suspect, but at this age?
