we still don't have the heat on, but they did turn the air conditioner off, it might get below freezing one of these nights. I have a down comforter, so I'm usually fine when I'm in bed, but right now I'm pretty chily.
It is getting a little cold out here on the porch, I think we might want to consider moving up to the cabin soon. The porch is fine during the day, but at night I want to curl up in front of a warm virtual fire. I'm working on a grant proposal, but I don't know how to do it, and I don't know what I'm trying to say because I don't know what I plan on studying exactly.

Let me get this straight, Sarcare, you're asking for money but you don't know what it's for? Can I do that too?
meadowbee, I agree with KQ, put the chocolate in. I'm not the biggest chili fan, so take this for what it's worth, but one of my favorite "funny" ingredients is cinnamon sugar (or just cinnamon). Cuts the tartness of the tomatoes a bit. It also gives off such a tantalizing smell.
Well, I can't stick around tonight, I've really got to finish putting together my kids' Halloween costumes. And I guess now I've got to come up with one for myself, too, if I'm coming to the party on Monday. Later.

well it isn't as silly as that, I know there are these documents I want to look into at the Huntington, but I don't know what I want to argue because I have not seen the documents. So I have to say what I want to say about the documents before I see them. I want them to give me money so I can go out to the libary and study them, and anyother documents I can find there.
I would put chocolate in the chili, I think it would be good!

Sarcare, I would try to get a little guidance on the forms as it can be all about using the right "buzz" words.
Your lecture about the Romans and Christianity sounds great! I think that would have been such an exciting time to live in but I know there was a lot of persecution too.

Oh no, Jenna Dean--we're not going to fight about the WoW! I guess you couldn't hear me chuckling thru cyberspace. I just said that becuz we're always taught that moderation in everything is good, & we've had so many pies, cheesecakes, & other confections lately.
Yes, of course pumpkin & fruits for pies are from the vegetable kingdom, & sugar cane too--just like coffee, wine grapes, tobacco, & marijuana. As long as we don't eat too much of anything, we're probably fine, AND we won't get too bored.
Speaking of which, V's guests had to get back to the Lord's errand & so my sweet potato pie didn't get eaten. I don't suppose that poses a problem on the porch I brought vanilla ice cream to top it off (vanilla is a veggie, hurray!)

Meadowbee, It depends on which kind of chili you are making as to what you use! Traditional chili wouldn't have chocolate in it! My dear Texan would have a cow if I adulterated his chili that way! However, Cincinatti Chili has chocolate and several other spices! I happen to like Cincinatti Chili once in awhile. We saw this being made on a cooking show last week and it was served like a spaghetti sauce. It just all depends on what you want.

Curelom, I think I shall have another piece of pie! The vanilla ice cream has to go though! I am sittin' here not getting warmer! I know, , I have some packages of hot apple cider to put out here! Where's the microwave? Ahhh, that's better! I, too, must scoot off like JennaDean. Tonight I am going to take advantage of my cleared dining room table and cut out patterns for my costume. My oldest daughter is doing her little sister's for me! If I don't get back, I will "see" everyone tomorrow! Posts: 4138 | Registered: Sep 2005

Many years ago, I was asked to bring some chilli to a Relief Society function. I had never made it before and used my mom's recipee. I think that I thought it was too thick and thinned it some.
Then, I went and everybody was raving about the chilli from an older lady who was originally from Mexico. She was my visiting teaching companion's mom and a real nice lady. Her chilli was so thick with barely any liquid and looked very meaty.

I'll have a piece of that sweet potato pie; I've heard that sweet potatoes are one of the healthiest veggies around. I really should increase my calcium, too, and fend off osteoporosis, so I'll take some ice cream with it.

I made tutus with a lady who sewed ballet costumes for college and pro groups in Dallas. That stuff kills your hands. You also really need a rotary cutter.

Hello, animals! Alright, give me time to get on the Porch puppies! Annabelle, I can hear your purring a mile away! I see that the Porch has been lonely today! Punkin, I have only two hands, here, climb onto my lap!
I just wandered over for a quick hello and some TLC! I am having school frustrations again and I don't want to deal with them! My next 4 days are now totally rearranged because the teachers dealing with Amber can't seem to follow the rules on getting the best from Amber! There are days like today that I wish her life was much simpler, and yet I count the blessings of the progress she has made!
Michaela, I know without a shadow of a doubt in my mind that come the day of Resurection, Ryan will be able to look you in the eyes, tell you he loves you, and thank you for all the love you have given him through the years!
Well, hubby is up and I need to work on dinner! I have no idea what I want to cook! I wish we could order in but the wallet is practically empty and the rest is for gas! See y'all later! Okay, pets, everyone off the lap! I know someone will be by later to give y'all attention!

I started making chili this morning at seven, and now I have four gallons ready to go. I took counsel from the porch community and used the chocolate in it. One son has sampled a small bowl and deemed it superior. But what if he was just hungry. So my youngest is home from school now and after he finishes wrapping the potatoes, he's going to do a scientific taste test, too. I'm leaving a large crockpot full here for anyone who is in the mood for chili. Sorry, KQ, I don't think that's you today. Are you tired of ginger ale? If not, I put some in the fridge for you. We invited all the young men to the campfire (there's 40 of them), but I will be surprised if even half show up. I tried to stack the deck in our favor and asked a leader from each quorum to take a part on the program. I may be bringing home plenty of left-overs to put in the freezer and enjoy throughout the winter. Whew, I'll be glad when this is over. I hope it goes the way I've envisioned it! I'll certainly be thankful to get back to my regular duty of providing porch land security. Posts: 4056 | Registered: Apr 2005

Wooo-hoooo! It's over! About 30 or so attended! Everyone did great with their portion of the program. The crowd-pleaser was the parody of "Ghost Riders in the Sky" called "Ghost Chickens in the Sky." Colin's friend accompanied himself on the guitar, and the "bok, bok, bok, bo-oks" in the chorus kept everyone laughing. The chili was great; we have half left, and the chocolate was quite a conversation piece. My son gave me a kiss so quickly that his brother didn't have time to snap a picture, so he was ordered to do it again and practically glued his lips to my cheek till it was done. I loved hearing the snapping, crackling fire and smelling that woodsy aroma. Nice ambience! And it probably looked good, too. Anyway, I'm finished going on and on about it. Thank you for your interest and support! Now, I'm going to re-live the evening's festivities. Have a great night! KQ, I'm glad you could eat some chili. There's plenty more, everybody. Please, eat up! Hi, Melissa from Australia. Have some chili, too.

KQ, sorry to hear you didn't have such a good day. I wish my grocery store had ginger beer; I'd pick some up for you. I brought some chicken soup that you can have now or later.
Wow, that's terrific, Meadowbee! Kudos to you & your son, & all who participated & enjoyed. And thanks for the delicious chile. We had a bit of drizzle & it is a cool evening, so chile is perfect. I brought a couple of warm apple pies; maybe we can skip the ice cream tonight. Does anyone still eat a piece of cheddar cheese on the side with apple pie? I brought some.
The critters are all huddled together in the warmest corner of the porch. I brought some old blankets & rug remnants for them. Punkin looks so cozy snuggled up with Hound, Annabelle, & Pepper--how are we going to persuade her to go home next month? And how will we break the news to the others?

Meadowbee, your campfire sounds wonderful. I've been waiting to hear how it turned out. I wonder if we could change tradition in the next 9 years or so and do our son's that way. (Boy, I'm jumping the gun; he's not even a cub scout yet.)
BTW, I don't think Melissa's actually in Australia, but she was quoting the last line from the book that Ketchup started with. If I'm wrong, Melissa, and you're actually vising Australia, I'll want to hear a lot more about it!
I LOVE apple pie, pass me a piece! Chili cook-off for our ward is Saturday, so I'll see if I can get hubby to put some chocolate in ours. That reminds me, I've got to get these costumes finished by then!
If I'm going to hang around this porch any longer I need at least ONE kitty on my lap. I'm shivering. Is that pie still warm?

Yeah, JennaDean's right. I'm not in Austrailia, though I am fascinated by that place. We are Amazing Race junkies and when I have seen episodes where the teams are down under, I have been so impressed with the people they have interacted with there. Not to mention the adorable accent!
The quote was from the book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No-good, Very-bad Day. I just about had it memorized when I was a kid.
"I went to bed with gum in my mouth and now there's gum in my hair..."

Grump. Ketchup, why didn't you tell me tutus were so hard? No wonder they cost so much to buy them professionally made. "Couple of layers of tulle gathered on an elastic waistband, how hard can that be? I can make that!"
Actually, I think she's going to be the cutest darn ballerina I've ever seen. *grin*

Hey everyone! It's really starting to feel like fall - the air is chilly tonight... so perfect for a nice bowl of meadowbee's homemade chili! Delicious! I'm glad the camp fire program went well! I wish I could have been a fly on a tree to celebrate with you. Plus, I just love camp fires.
It's nice to hear others are busy making costumes. I've been working on ours this week, too. Last night I got most of mine made and I'm supposed to be working on my husband's right now, but I lost a little bit of the initial excitement. I keep having these scenarios of showing up in our costumes only to feel so embarrassed that I'll want to hide in the corner, or at least wish the costume came with a mask so that nobody would know it was me in the goofy-looking costume!
Maybe I'll feel more brave before Saturday comes. If not, then I can work on myself all year to get the courage to wear it next Halloween. I can't wait for the porch party on Monday. I have work that morning, but I'll try to sneak away for a little bit.
Well, I really better get back to the sewing machine before it gets too late. I have a big day tomorrow - I'll be conducting a seminar that the doctor I work for is putting on. I'm a little nervous because I don't really know what I'm supposed to do... I hope it goes well.

J/K. It's my own fault, I always think I can whip these things together with no pattern and no previous experience. I always end up getting it done, but with much more work than I anticipated....
Imo, it's all in the attitude. Just go in there as if you're the entertainment. If you act embarrassed people will be embarrassed for you - if you act happy and confident people will really enjoy your enthusiasm for the holiday!
I really have to go to bed!

Wow, the porch has been busy today. I've been so preoccupied in the kitchen I haven't had a minute to step outside. Getting ready for the little people to come for a party this weekend.
Meadowbee, your event sounded so wonderful I wanted to be there myself! I'm happy for you and your son that it all went so well. More memories to tuck away and treasure. I would never have imagined a chili recipe with chocolate in it. Just when you think life is getting predictable, somebody puts chocolate in the chili - -
Hi, there, Lost Sheep. In case no one told you, there are always quilts and sweaters in the trunk here if you get cold. Of course, cold is all relative. V. and Jenna Dean are from Florida, and so they think it's cold when it gets below 70 or so. Sar is cold most of the time because she has a bunch of cold-blooded roomates (oh, that didn't sound good), and some of us wait until the temperature falls below zero before we really start to layer on the woolies and threaten to move to Florida. With the temperature dropping, I think we'll need to head up to the Cabin shortly after Halloween. Want to be there well before Thanksgiving.
Jenna Dean, when you're finished cutting all that tulle, I have a tiny chiffon dress you can cut out.
Curelom, you are entirely correct. The sugar must go (sometime after Christmas.) Meanwhile, I ate a plum in your honor.
Melissa, would you mind helping me get Parrot inside? Sorry, Big Bird, but your porch days are over for this year. Frozen feathers are not a pretty sight. You'll be comfy inside.
V., thank you for your kind words.
Well, it's time for me to sit down with an old friend of mine - - Helaman is his name. C'mon, kitties, you can keep me warm while I read.

Good morning! Parrot, I think I am going to come in the house with you! I know everyone is laughing at JennaDean and me! I was born in Florida and I do not like cold weather!
Michaela, can we help you move us to the cabin Thanksgiving weekend?
I can't stay long! Have to get a book about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. BTW Did you know he has another name in between Arthur and Conan! I also have an appointment with my counselor today!

by the way, meadowbee, have you seen the newest set of files offered at lds.org? they've got a bunch of braille files now! I thought I'd just missed them before, but I saw the announcement in the October Ensign, so I guess I'm not as behind the times as I thought *grin* (although I've also found the Gospel Art Kit online recently, and that has evidently been up for a while...)

My sis read the announcement of the braille files near the end of the Oct. Ensign, I think. I'm still in the first half of it. But if these files are what I'm thinking they are, alas, they won't help me because they require one to have a braille printer which costs several thousand dollars. I am going to check it out to make certain, though. Thanks for reminding me! Posts: 4056 | Registered: Apr 2005

Hmmm, the weather has been very erratic here, yesterday was cool, with a little drizzle. Today is a beautiful almost balmy fall day. I still haven't gotten the extra blankets out, & half the time I just use a sheet because I seldom get that cold. I'm pretty good at tolerating various weather, but I'm not praying for any hurricanes or droughts.
I'm not the world's greatest knitter (I can make the stitches stay together, but I can't always make them look exactly alike). But I can see that the recipients don't care about that. In a way, this is like home-made chicken soup. It helps people feel better when they're sick, but it also helps them feel better because someone cared about them & did this personally for them.
