The other dream thread reminded me of nightmares I've had. They involve some aspect of my mission, and I get an intense panic that I'm back in the field with TWO YEARS all over again.

Then I wake up, realize I'm at home with my wife and kids, and an intense feeling of joy comes to me.

The odd things is, my mission was a good experience, and I really enjoyed it for the most part. Or, at least I thought I did.

Is this a common dream for returned missionaries? And if so, what reactions do people usually have?

Yes, I do. It's always a quandry too, because now I have a husband and children and sometimes I am taking them with me and other times I'm leaving them for 18 months.

It's not that I didn't love my mission, but it's just a wierd concept to yank me out of my life, more than 10 years later, and try to fit back into that situation.

Sometimes I dream that I am back in Norway and all of the dialogue is, of course, in Norwegian.

My experience rather is opposite.

My mission was the hardest thing I've ever done, and I was glad enough to put it behind me, but when I dream I'm going on a mission or I'm on a mission it's always happy.

It's not at all jarring because every time I dream I seem to have amnesia about my real life.

Yep, me, too. Sometimes my family speaks Danish. Sometimes I translate for them.

On a related note, do you dream in color or black & white? Do you actively participate in most of your dreams, or just watch them like a movie? I always dream in color. Most of my dreams are like movies (about 60%).

Don't dream about the mish anymore, but maybe cuz I'm 38! Ho, Nelly!

As for the other stuff, I dream in color, in fact I can't remember any black and white dreams, maybe we'll get to that on the Twilight Zone thread... And I'm usually seeing things through my own eyes, but it can go back and forth.

I don't dream about my mission, but sometimes I dream about speaking in Bulgarian or going back and not remembering the language. Probably 'cause I can't remember so much and I know I'll go back there sometime and feel like a greenie again. ARRGG!

I dream in color and very, very detailed dreams. I'm about 60% participating. I have dreamed in black and white, but those are usually nightmares.

I remember my dreams a lot. I still remember dreams that I had as a kid.

Once in a while. My "dream" companions are really freaked out when they find out I'm carrying a gun (I'm still a deputy in my dreams) and then get really freaked out that I'm going to go sleep with my wife instead of in our apartment [ROFL]

Yes I do (and I'm 38 lol). Most of the time I am sort of married. I don't know how to explain it - I'm married, but I'm not. It makes perfect sense in my dream.

My dreams are always in color and I always have some sort of participation.

beefche- Your comment about your b&w dreams being the nightmare ones really intrigued me. Sooo... last night I dreamed and it was a "nightmare" type. I was taking these kids up a tall, tall stairway to go on some sort of amusement park ride. It was an older stairway with wooden stairs and stuff you had to nagivate on your way up. One of the kids swung her legs over this stuff and she accidently had her legs on the OUTSIDE of the stairway as she started to stand up again. My hand clenched into a fist to grab her shirt, but my fist was empty. She fell down and took about 3-4 seconds to land, that's how high up we were. I could here screaming down below and her parents running over there - she was dead instantly. I just couldn't believe my hand missed her. I couldn't do anything. Coudn't cry, couldn't scream, couldn't move...I felt her mom's eyes on me and thought how weird or heartless I must look right now... Yet, I felt I did all I could do? Weird. ANYWAY, the point is, it was in b&w. But see, here's the difference, I think. We humans have only experienced b&w in a 2-dimensional way (unless we're dreaming). So, actually b&w is not "that bad" in a 3-dim. world, for say, your animals and stuff. I always thought how handicapped they must be. But it was actually a cool experience, in fact, I think you're depth perception is even better or something... [Smile]

yup, had that dream a time or two, but it's been awhile.

I don't sleep much so I don't dream much anymore.

I can't answer the original question, since I was not an active member of the church at missionary age, but I do have dreams of going on a mission with my wife.

Just yesterday I had a dream that aliens had come to the earth. Everyone was both intrigued by these beings, and fearful of them. They looked just like you or me, but were tougher and could not be destroyed through conventional means. At one point they gathered together the children and declared it was time to give the children "milk", because (as is the case in most dreams) the children "needed" milk.

Somehow I could discern that their true intention was to poison the children's milk. Then claim that it was all an accident and let the courts battle it out ad infinitum. Since they were intent upon destroying all humanity, and apparently had an infinite supply of money, they didn't care about lawsuits.

I ran and got my own supply of milk. I ran back to Hannah and Becca who were close together and cried to them, "Don't drink the milk!" All the other kids around them drank readily, and Hannah had it to her mouth, but I got there in time to save them both. But where was Emi?

All the other kids died. Then I found Emi, she didn't drink the milk. (She's always been a picky eater.) She said she didn't drink the milk, because, even though she couldn't see me, and I her, she heard my voice.

I told Emi about the dream. She got a kick out of it... I hope that she really does heed the right voices...

I've had similar dreams about being a missionary again. They don't make sense half the time. Sometimes I dream I was sent home early or something, and then have the opportunity to finish my mission, which will be an entire 2 more years. I'm excited and dread it at the same time, especially since I'm married in the dream, and am leaving Sarah behind.
