My stake has a "Special Stake Conference" scheduled for the end of April. A GA will be in attendance. According to the stake calendar it will be Sunday only, with no Saturday sessions scheduled. We had stake conference in January, with our next conference, in August, still on the calendar.
So what would be possible reasons for a "Special Stake Conference?" Our stake president has been in office less than four years. When he was called it was at a regularly scheduled conference and the reorganization was announced two or three months in advance. Based on the size, strength, and demographics of our stake, it's not likely that we're going to be split, merged, folded, spindled, mutilated, blended, or frappéed.

I did a quick google and found this about special stake conferences. Looks like this has happened to several people w/no special change just a visit:

There are a number of reasons that a "special stake conference" would be held.
1. I know of a nearby stake about 7 years ago where they had a regular stake conference in August and then had a special stake conference in September. The stake president who had served for four years was released. Word was he had "heart" problems. I don't know that any of us will know the 'real' reason. A year later, the new stake president ordained the former stake president as a patriarch.
2. There are special problems that the member of the 70 is aware of and he will be there to address them with the stake leaders.
3. The Lord has inspired the member of the 70 to be there for reasons unknown to the members of the stake.
4. ???? sometimes leaders are being 'vetted' for future callings

We hope not--but serious issues in the stake that require the attention of a Seventy?
Something has been going so well or is being done so well that it merits a special commendation from a General Authority?
The Seventy who will be coming has a son or daughter living in your area who is getting married, having a baby, etc., and he needs an excuse for a visit?

At General Conference next week, they're going to announce that a series of "Special Stake Conferences" will be held at stakes which have been chosen for City of Enoch status in preparation for their pending translation before the Last Days wipe out all the non-special Stakes.

It doesn't take a GA, or even a stake conference to combine or divide a ward.
They're not splitting the stake; if they did it would make two really small stakes.
Thinking about it now, I'm guessing it's just that the GA is going to be in the area and wants to visit.
However,

has gotten me thinking that maybe I should quit my job. I don't want to be outside the stake boundaries when it happens.

Both of my experiences with special Stake Conferences have been boundary changes but I don't recall if a GA was in attendance. I'm guessing new Stake leadership.

Surely the process of translation, being a divine "phenomenon," transcends time, space, & matter as we know it, & there would be provisions to take up those who are qualified but happen to be outside the boundaries at the time. You could be in Sin City, Murder Capital USA, Ciudad Juarez, Washington D.C., even Searchlight, & if you were a member in good standing of the Stake of Enoch, you'd be beamed up with everyone else.

Last time it happened to us it was because another stake was combined into ours. But, it served as our stake conference (we didn't have another.) It was earlier than had been scheduled so they just unscheduled the previously scheduled one.

Well, that explains our special stake conf that is going to be held in May.
Actually one of the rumors (the one I believe most) is that there is a GA who is going to be in the area so we are having a stake conf to hear him speak.

We had one last year. There was going to be a broadcast one at the beginning of June but they announced a special one, in addition, for April.
Although we weren't told the official reason it was easy to work out that 3 apostles were visiting various stakes in the north of England and that one of them was visiting us. And even that wasn't difficult to work out either - President Packer, who visited us, is our mission president's wife's father!
We did speculate that our SP was going to be released but I suspect that will happen this April's conference or the one in the fall as he has been in the job for 9 years. I've been told that SP's are called by inspiration and released by computer!

We had a special stake conference some time back that was neither to reorganize the stake nor correct serious problems. What happened is that there was a training session for stake presidents in a nearby large city and the GAs running the training meeting decided to visit nearby stakes the following Sunday. One had served in our area when he was a missionary way back when, and picked our stake.

Well today was our special stake conference and it turns out it was something like what the last three posters said. According to Elder Robbins of the Seventy, the GA in attendance, the Church is now holding quadrennial training meetings for stake presidents and bishops in given areas. Ours was yesterday. Elder Bednar, Elder Robbins, and an area seventy conducted the training for the presidents and bishops of a dozen different stakes. The training was held in our stake center. Today Elder Bednar attended stake conference in a nearby stake, Elder Robbins attended ours.
There was no sustaining of Church officers as is done in a regular stake conference although we did conduct one bit of stake business. We sustained a new stake patriarch and his replacement on the high council.

Well, I WAS going to put in my .02 . . . but it seems the 'mystery' has been solved. We had our "Special Stake Meeting" back in March . . . and let me tell you, rumours were running rampant as soon as it was announced. But, as the others have said, it was simply a matter of training being held and the General Authorities taking the time to meet with 3 of the 4 stakes in the area to have a special meeting . . . It was a real treat for us to have Elder Hallstrom speak to us. I was in the choir for that meeting, and ironically enough, it was dh and ds who got to shake Elder Hallstrom's hand . . . he told ds (10) to go on a mission! Posts: 14 | Registered: Apr 2010
