For everyone who doesn't know, Square is an app and an attachment to a smartphone (iPhone, Droid) that allows the phone to process credit/debit card transactions. No set-up fee, just a 2.75% processing fee. http://squareup.com
In planning huge singles activities, I come across so many singles who don't carry cash and will come to the door at a church dance or church conference with only their debit/credit card on hand.
So on top of the original cash box at the door, I wonder if a priesthood leader (or whoever is in charge of finances for the evening) alongside the cash box, can have their smartphone ready to process debit/credit card transactions on the spot.
Has anyone else done this? I think it's a great idea and solution BTW...

Nope. I know when we did our conference last year, there were a couple of people who only brought credit cards. But, we had them sign onto the website on their phone and pay with credit card that way.

Yep, Beefie that's always an option. Before smartphones, we used to have them go into the Family History Center (in the same bldg) and register online there.
I still think this Square app would be a good tool to have at our regional dances... It would definitely speed the long lines at the door.

What about announcing that it is cash only when you send out/post online about invites? Until recently I didn't carry cash either, but if I knew ahead of time that I would need cash it was easy to make sure I had some.
The smart phone thing makes me a little uncomfortable. Something along the lines of the haves and the have nots.

I don't see how this is a have and have not issue. (Since the Priesthood Leader himself will use his own smartphone to process the transaction. No one else needs to have a smartphone to feel like a have or have not
We have always stated dances are in cash. But some forget (or use the no cash excuse to try to get into the dance for free). It's just an added convinence. Sometimes at our dances, there is usually a 10 minute wait to get into the doors with a long line while they are searching for cash in their purses or wallets. Or it takes time for our married couples helping trying to make change at the table.
