The Devil Colony is a James Rollins novel, and it is not all about what you might guess from the title. Not a great book, but entertaining. The most fascinating thing about it: It is a fictional action story (lots of things blowing up) written by a non-LDS author who uses the Book of Mormon as a backdrop for a story without saying anything pro or con about Mormons. (Though he does mistakenly call Joseph Smith "John" Smith a couple of times.) Some foul language, just so you know.
So what is the "Devil Colony?"
--> mild spoiler alert <--
The term "Devil Colony" refers to Native Americans who, according to Rollins, wanted to be the 14th colony at the time of the birth of the U.S. There wasn't much political correctness back in 1776, so the Native Americans were referred to as devils.

The premise is intriguing, kazbert. If it happens to get out my way in my tiny library, I'll probably pick it up.

I just started reading it. I'm trying to decide if it's sci fi, thriller, adventure, historical fiction, or a little of each.
There's gold plates, Ben Franklin, volcanoes, nanotechnology, Native American activism, & of course an eccentric European villain.
I didn't peek ahead to see how it ends, so I can't provide any spoilers. There is some vulgarity (almost the norm in popular fiction anymore, but nothing you wouldn't hear in a high school hallway) & violence.

I've read many of james rollins novels, this one hit home to me for several reasons. I studied Anthropology at the University of Utah and have been to several of the locations mentioned in the book. Plus the connections to the Book of Mormon and things that he writes in the book, I caught a few inconsitencies in the book, one being calling Joseph Smith, John, there are a couple of other minor things about locations in SLC, minor errors that you only find annoying if you have lived in SLC and know what's wrong.
I enjoy his books, look forward to the next one.

Now I'm at the point where it's also a doomsday story. The world has a select group of super or mega volcanoes, but it would be spoiling to say exactly how the doomsday prospect comes about.
I still haven't decided what I think of the whole story, although it's fairly entertaining & has a lot going on.
