Picked up Earth Unaware by OSC and Aaron Johnston. Hope to get it signed tomorrow night. Has anyone read it yet? I'm excited to hear OSC speak about the book.

I got my copy from Amazon on Monday. I'm only about three chapters into it, but intrigued, and interested in seeing how the story develops (I haven't read their Formic Wars Comics that cover much of the same events/characters - it's all new for me!)

Went to the book signing last night. Aaron Johnston who co-authored the book was also speaking. Definately a highlight of my year. They were very informative, funny, endearing, and gracious.

Finished it up and enjoyed it. Looking forward to more. As I understand it, there should be three total in this series. A little annoyed by the Science Fiction genre being so fixated on "evil corporations". It is tired and unoriginal but it is so prevalent I can enjoy Science Fiction despite it or I wouldn't be able to enjoy much Science Fiction.

I'm almost done with it. I have one gripe so far that stands out.

When the heck did the name change from "hormigas" to "Formics"? I remember that when the three ships' captains were in conference about what to do, one of the captains said that the scientific community would never accept a living designation, but I didn't see anything where they decided on a new formal name for the buggers.
Also, I don't mind the evil corporation mentality in this one quite as much, since (so far) Lem has completely lived up to the preconceived notions that the El Cavador miners have of corporates. I mean, come on. He killed a man, and his only concern was to destroy the records - and then later to ensure that El Cavador wiped out the copies they made when they hacked his systems. No compensation, not even an apology?
Edit: Okay, so maybe Lem is breaking out of that stereotype a bit. At the very end. I'm torn between hoping for this to be the start of a new series so I can see what he does and being frustrated if it's the start of a new series and I have to wait for more.

While I don't consider it a spoiler, I'll put in the spoiler lines.

Actually, the change to the latin Formics (ant) was explained briefly as being more universally appropriate if I recall correct. It was definitely explained, however, even if I got the exact explanation wrong.

Hmm. I wonder how I missed it. When I realized the name had changed, I actually went back looking for it, because I recalled the objection being raised to the term that the free miners used.
I also didn't realize that Formic was Latin for ant. That makes complete sense now.

I'm still trying to get over the change from Bugger to Formic. After what the Buggers/Formics did, I would think the polite term of Formic would be used by but a few. Everyone else would be too ticked off to call them anything nicer than bugger.
