That is an amazing story. It reminds me of reading through the transcripts of Salt Lake High Council hearings in the Church Archives, when the stake leadership was expected to resolve legal disputes between church members, rather than have them litigated in front of hostile Federal judges. The greatest goal of those hearings was not "justice" or "equity" or "enforcing the law", but reconciling the parties so they could respect and support each other within the church community. I did my research back in 1976-1978, and had to report my progress to Leonard Arrington every month. It resulted in an article published in the Utah Law Review in Fall 1978.
