If this has already been done, let me know and I will delete this thread. But I am interested in all of the interesting names on this board and would like to know how you all came by them.
As for me, mine seems at first not to fit me at all. "Wayfaring" is most quickly associated with "man of grief." I am neither a man, nor have I had my share of grief in this world. But wayfaring actually means one who "travels especially on foot." And since walking is my favored means of transportation (and recreation), in that way it fits me.
How about you guys?
By the way, in a recent post I stated that all of my comments are "inane, boring, or at most annoying," hoping that someone would contradict me. Alas, that is one of the few statements I have been able to make that no one has taken issue with! You guys are all way too agreeable. Oh well, I guess when you state the obvious . . .

Sorry about the lack of disagreement. I do disagree. Just didn't say so.
It's a good question.
A few years ago, I was a computer programmer in an office building that had a sea of cubicles. I was a contractor and new, so I started out in the smallest cubicles. Mine was only high enough to mostly cover me when I was sitting.
I had a full beard back then. If the guy next to me said my name, I would stand up to look at him.
I did that once and he busted a gut. I asked him what was so funny. He said that me standing up like that reminded him of some giant mutant prairie dog from you-know-where coming up out of the ground.
So, from there on out, I was called Prairie Dog. He often introduced me to new contractors as the Giant Mutant Prairy Dog from...
I can get kind of hypoglycemic. When I do, I can get pretty belligerent. He also warned new contractors to make sure and feed me if I looked hungry. I had been known, according to legend, to pull the arms off of people and toss them, and their arms, out the 16th floor window. He called it, "Pluck and Chuck."
None of it was true, of course, but I enjoyed the notoriety.

A dear friend in college (author of the Sariah McDuff books... now theres a close-brush-with fame thing, but this is the wrong thread) wrote a poem for me, in which she described me as a plant that puts vines out all-over-the-place, bringing life and a fresh breath of air to unexpected places (I'm paraphrasing; she said it much better). And that's where the "Tendril" part comes from. "14" is just my lucky number (my birthdate).

Homestar Runner is the character from www.homestarrunner.com that most closely resembles the way I act when I'm goofing off around people I know.
I guess ya don't really see much of that on a message board.

The One and Only ME. Not after that movie that came out a couple years ago (my registration predates it, especially my registration at Ornery with the same name).

quote: For anyone interested, Euphrasie is pronounced pretty much like Euphrates, except with a Zee instead of a Tees. It's French. I'm not French. I happened to be reading Les Miserables back in the day I discovered the internet and needed a user name, and it stuck. I like it.
FlyByNight looked up the word, which apparently has the following derivation:
quote: [NL. euphrasia, fr. Gr. ? delight, fr. ? to delight; ? well + ? heart, mind: cf. LL. eufrasia, F. eufrasie.]
My post again:
quote: I'd never actually looked up the meaning, as it is a proper noun in Les Mis, but the derivation from 'delight,' etc. makes sense in context. Now I like me more!

Mine is something of a multiple play on about 5 words or names. Most people can guess two or three of them. It sounded good and appears to be original.

My internet name for the past 10 years or so has always been shortened to BG, and it has become a sort of nickname; also I write with a pseudonym that has the initials BG in the name.
The 27 is an entirely random number and has no significance, though my log-in name on some sites is also followed by numbers, so the use of numbers is a bit of a habit.
Nothing exciting!!
My real name is not as flowing as Nathan Shumate in using nshumate as a screen name, that wouldn't work for me
Nathan is a great name, I am sure he already knows it means 'Gift of the Lord'.

KathrynHJanitor -- Kathryn is my first name, H is my middle initial, and Janitor is my Nauvoo occupation.
I thought I'd better write that fast, while it's still true! All too soon, I'm going to be KathrynHPerson or KathrynHAnonymous or KathrynHUnemployed, depending on my state of mind at the moment.
quote:NATHAN Gender: Masculine Usage: English, Biblical Pronounced: NAY-than [key] Means "giver" in Hebrew. In the Old Testament this is the name of a prophet and also a son of King David. This name can also function as a short form of JONATHAN or NATHANAEL.
You are an inspiring leader whose originality, creativity and wisdom are applied to creating practical solutions to "unsolvable" problems. Humanitarian and idealistic your vision is to make the world a better place and you will work to this end. Hardworking and tenacious people admire you for your honesty and integrity. You are a loved and loyal friend and partner. Your have the potential to achieve enormous success in the world.
I've seen it used a few times in books and articles about writing, which I love to do. At the time, I was very much a beginner at posting in a forum, too, so it seemed appropriate.
It confuses people because it ends with an "o" so they think I'm a guy, and I regret that, but I wouldn't want to change--I feel like Tyro.

I like these type of why did you pick your name threads because it is fun to find out the reasons for the creative names.
It is also enlightening to me to find out which people are male/female. For example, somehow I did think Wayfaring was a guy, I also used to think Tyro was male. Sorry: no offense, just my own ignorance!
Nita: is my nickname in some circles. Smile: I love smiley faces

Thanks, BG. (But I honestly do know what my name means. If the "El" part isn't on it, the "from God" meaning isn't there. And my name isn't short for Nathaniel, so...)

Wayfaring, I do not believe that I have had the pleasure of meeting you before. I usually hang out a lot in the singles thread but will have to read some of your posts.
I have said it before, but will repeat it in case people are not aware of why I chose my addy. Abby76 is for Abigail Adams and the year 1976. My sophmore history teacher was a fiesty older nun who used to speak of how wonderful she was. My sister gave me her biography a couple years ago and I was really amazed at her remarkable mind and character. I did get so anxious for her and John Adams to be reuinted from his long stays in Europe working as a statesman just reading the book. Imagine what it would be like actually living it.

lissa is the last part of my first name Melissa. The 2061 comes from one of the Space Oddesy books, the second I believe. I came up with this one right out of high school for an email account and it has just stuck because I am forgetful and can't remember a ton of user names.

Yeah...I'm boring...mine is pretty obvious: I'm the mother of a wild little guy named Ryan . He's my baby, so I just used his name since "caragregtrevorbethanyivanalexaryansmama" would be kind of unwieldy.

Tehoa is my middle name. I was named after my maternal grandmother and she was named after my her mother's dearest friend, a Maori. So that makes me a Hawaiian with a Maori family name.

Cool, I had been thinking about starting this same thread, but hadn't gotten around to it. Thanks!
My name is a bit weird... When I was at BYU, I dated a guy. All the kids in his family had a name that started with a J. We had kidded about getting married (it didn't happen), and how I'd need a J name to fit in. So, bored at work one day, I squished up my real name, Utahified the spelling and put a J on the front of it, and ended up with Jaimilyn. It's what I've used on the internet since then (gee, about 9 years now), and I rather like having a name that no one else has. Not sure why I rarely capitalize it... makes it easier for chatrooms I suppose.
By the way, if jaimilyn is too long to write out, my friends elsewhere on the net call me "jaimi" or "jaim", both are fine, and easier to spell Posts: 2959 | Registered: Oct 2004

Ok. here's mine. Before I had children I had a little pug dog named Pugslee. He was spoiled rotten. After we had our first child he went to stay at my mom's and one day he was just gone, disappeared. We don't know if he was stolen, run over or what. Anyway, my nickname for him was Puggo. Or PuggoWuggo. I chose this screen name because I refuse to believe he is dead. My puggowuggo lives on !!!! Have you seen the Utah name page ? (Said the guy who is named after a spice, a character from To Kill a Mockingbird and a particularly rowdy scout trip in '95. No irony. )

Mine is a play on my first and last names as well as an imitation of the way many Germans pronounce "the Mormon" when they speak English.

I haven't seen your link, Dillfest, but I think I got the inspiration around the same time as I first saw The Utah Baby Namer which I'm shocked is still on the internet and evidently still being updated. A testament to the power of good Utah names Posts: 2959 | Registered: Oct 2004

My name comes from a complete lack of creativity. When I got my first e-mail account years ago, my kids were trying to get me to come up with some cute, clever name. I, much to their dismay, settled for my own name, first and last. But someone was already using that name. (I was amazed to find that there are a lot of people in the world with my first and last name.) I tried shortening it to my first name and last initial, but that was taken, too. So I came up with cindytee. Total lack of imagination. Sorry I don't have a more interesting story. I'd offer to make up a good story but probably wouldn't be any more successful than I was in coming up with a good name.

quote: en·nui Listlessness and dissatisfaction resulting from lack of interest; boredom
It's how I feel as a result of my job; it is stable, pays well, a "real" career, good benefits, but I am utterly, life-sappingly bored. The "problem" is that it pays extremely well, and I don't want to expend the effort to find a more interesting job that pays as well. And, just this week I bought $100k worth of new servers and network gear, so I'll have fun for a couple of weeks when it all gets delivered. Then I'll be back to the daily monotony of watching blinking lights blink, listen to disk drives hum and users whine.

Ennui, send them over to Nauvoo for their Daily Whining Opportunity (DWO). That might make your job less Ennui-ish.
Oh yeah, and I chose MY name because I am 110% sweet. All the time. Just ask me. And I'm never sarcastic or ironic. And I never begin sentences with a preposition. Or was it a conjunction?

Ennui, I sympathize with you. I earn good money, I'm valued at work, but I'm very, very bored. I'm bored not only with my current job, but with my career. I'd like to become a pastry chef instead of a Software QA Engineer, but you can't get the same money as a pastry chef. BTW, as long as I'm posting in this thread, I might as well explain that "arbilad" is a totally made up name. I cannot think of a specific inspiration or theme to which I can attribute it. I was merely creating a character for an MMORPG, and that's what came to me.
