Last night my wife made the comment, "I'm not going to watch anymore end-of-season shows." What with events like:

The child being taken captive on Lost.
The hitch hiking child being driven off by a stranger in E.R.
Kate getting shot on NCIS, especially given the manner of the shooting.
The car accident at the end of Alias

Are there more that I forgot?

Whatever happend to the mystery ending? I guess times have changed for the worse no more will the character survive. Nope fairly clear, there dead, there life is hanging by the barest of threads, a child is definitly going to get hurt.

I have to say I'm more disappointed then I am excited to see how things turn out.

I liked the Desperate Housewives season ender. (another on the list of reasons to love my TiVo)

NCIS was troubling for me, especially since we watched it right after coming home from SWIII, so I was fairly traumatized by Kate's death. I've gone through my cycle of grief (anger, denial, acceptance) and have decided that I'm ok with it, especially since I later found out that she asked to be released from the show. Since they had to get rid of her character anyway, this was an excellent way to do it, I'm dying to see reactions to the death next season. Especially Gibbs and Tony. I've heard it mentioned that this may make Tony mature a bit, which would be a welcome improvement to his character.

I haven't seen any of the other endings you mentioned, but they all seem at least nearly like good old fashioned cliff-hangers to me from your description. A cliff-hanger to me isn't necessarily something that we wait to find out the outcome of the scene, it can also be something that drastically alters the storyline, but we're stuck waiting for the conclusion of it. Kidnapping and sudden shocking death seem about right for that.

The Desperate Housewives season ender answered a slew of the questions that we'd started out the season with, but it opened so many more that my husband (who's the real DH fan, I only watch sometimes) was really dismayed to find out he'd have to wait until September to find out what happens next [Big Grin] Him: "So this comes on again in a month or two, right?" Me: "Um, no, like September" Him: *anguish*

Probably the most memorable season ender that I can remember is from Friends (ok, I was in college at the time, it was the cool thing to do). Rachel finally realizes that she does love Ross and goes to meet him at the airport with soem flowers. The last scene is her waiting at the gate (before 9/11 obviously) and we see him and the asian girlfriend walk off the gangplank, obviously an item. I can't remember offhand whether Rachel saw them at that point or not. All I remember is wanting to strangle the TV for stopping the story at that point!
