Arbilad started this game in another forum and I LOVE it... cause I just really love reading and looking for little history factoids. I think this will be really fun here because of the number of members and the post counts are a lot more diverse. But if there is no interest it's not a biggie... Here is Arbi's explanation:
quote: I've thought up a game that hopefully will be fun for everyone. The rules are simple. First, look at the post count of the last person on that thread. Then, name a historical event that happened in the year that corresponds with that number. Be sure to post what year you're using, since post counts change as people post more. So, for example, if the last poster had a post count of 1776, I would, in my post, name the year (1776), then try to find a historical event that happened in that year.
If the person's post count is higher than the actual current year, then simply use the last three digits of their post count. You can then choose between that as the year, or add a thousand. So, for example, if [someone had] 2278 posts, and he was the last poster, I could choose either the year 278 or 1278.
Okay, there you have it, I'll go first.
Year: 1915 (my last post count minus the 3 and adding a 1, since I am the first player) Event: Hiram Bingham III finishes his explorations of Machu Picchu , begun in 1911
**Thanks Arbi, for letting me borrow your idea! I hope that is okay... I really do like this game!**

March 31, 1917: The U.S. bought the Danish West Indies and renamed them the Virgin Islands. I thought for some reason it was more recent then this. Shows you what I know about history.
Cool game.
(I'm suppose to use the last posters post number for the year, right?)

August 25 1609 - Galileo Galilei demonstrates his first telescope to Venetian lawmakers. He is the first to perform observational astronomy as he observes the moons of Jupiter, after the manner of the ancient Egyptians who named the stars (astro-nomers), at the Edfu temple, over 2000 years earlier.
I actually knew that one, and looked up the details... We love the stars...

2 cool facts for the year 635, the current post count of Arbilad: (ETA- to correct spelling of Arbilad's name, thanks to the person who pointed this out).
quote:Astronomy
A clear statement of the rule that the tail of a comet always points away from the Sun is written in China. See also 1540 Astronomy.
Mathematics The value of π is given as 3.1415927 (using decimals) in the official history of the short-lived Sui dynasty of China. See also 600 Mathematics.
ETA: OK, I just realized Arbilad's current post count is actually 1410, the battle of Tannenberg (Grünwald) in the year 1410
Sorry for the goof, I'd looked at his Member # by accident. But I like the year 635 facts better, so will keep them there!
