Anyone watch this show? I cannot believe this was only one season. People are still raving about this series, one season, and it is a couple of years old. Since I love the show, of course it was canceled. It is really good, worth checking out, and then watching the follow up movie "Serenity" afterwards. There could be a second season, I sure hope so.
Cool opening song, a short mp3: Take my love, take my land Take me where I cannot stand I don't care, I'm still free You can't take the sky from me Take me out to the black Tell them I ain't comin' back Burn the land and boil the sea You can't take the sky from me There's no place I can be Since I found Serenity But you can't take the sky from me... http://www.fireflywiki.org/img/Ballad_of_Serenity.mp3

Hi, Valhalla! I don't have cable so we don't get to watch Firefly. We did buy Serenity though. I love that movie.
It's bad enough that SG1, Atlantis, and Farscape are a season behind! My friends with cable are sworn not to share this season's storylines and spoil the next season we get to watch. V.

I had several friends who were "browncoats". I never gave it much thought but I saw Serenity and was hooked.
Then, one day, while sick and planted in front of the TV, I caught Firefly on the science channel or something. It was good to see Wash again!!

The 2 hour season premiere was difficult to swallow. But if you just keep watching I promise you will be hooked half-way through the 3rd or 4th episode.
Best show in many years. Yes, including Lost!

Yes the fan base is desperately hopeful for a second and more seasons, but since Fox owns the franchise rights for TV, our most likely hope is for movies. Sadly in that regard, it was misadvertised and didn't really do all that well in the theaters. Thus making it less likely to be more of them, but the creator Joss Whedon(the creator of the excellent Buffy series as well) would like to be able to continue the storyline or the storyiverse.
For those less than familiar with this series. Firefly is groundbreakingly good TV. unfortunately Fox never gave it a chance. They showed some of the episodes out of order, and they put the show in a oft pre-empted timeslot. everything they did was guarentee to kill the ratings regardless of how good it was. Oh and btw it was shown on the FX channel not your local Fox station.

Yes, it was like they purposely tried to kill it. It seemed like a bit of a more original plot line, had good acting, some really pretty ladies (yeah, I thought that Kaylee was cute, kind of spunky!), but I liked the overall appeal of living life by your own rules. I live life by others' rules because there is no choice. I am not talking Gospel, rather idiotic laws and stupid rules people propagate that are nothing more than their trumped up opinion of how they think you should live (meaning live and act THEIR way).
So, for me, the show is kind of an escape, live life on your own terms thing.

Ya, Serenity was good enough that I just might do that. And that's saying something, coming from me, who just loves science fiction and yet I am almost universally disappointed with its portrayal in movies/television.

I'm bumping this up because, thanks to the favorable reviews from Nauvoodles and CrowSon, I finally checked the series out of the library (making sure they also had Serenity, and had myself a Firefly marathon. Overall, I have to say this was an awesome piece of television! Okay, not all of it was perfect. There was the episode where Captain Tightpants lost his for far too long. But overall, the concept was great, the ensemble cast was believable, and the writing was top-notch. I'll put it up with Joan of Arcadia as shows that ended entirely too soon.
I think it was JennaDean who spluttered when I said I needed to see if Nathan Fillion did as good a job on Firefly as I was seeing him do on Castle. I understand, now! Although I think my favorite character was Zoe. Warrior woman yet feminine, married, wants to be a mother, utterly loyal, and looked fantastic, even when covered in dirt and sweat. I should be jealous, but I'm not (smirk).
It appears I have joined the ranks of Browncoats.

I'm trying to understand if Serenity took place before Firefly, you know, within the universe.
Like it. Bought the TV series. If only Firefly had been on the CW, it'd still be on. A show can get crazy low ratings on the CW and still be their biggest hit, and make money because of the good demographics for the advertisers. Plus, they make lots of these CW shows in Vancouver, which is cheaper, I understand.

I finally bought the Firefly set! We do a marathon once in awhile and then do Serenity! I think they killed off too many characters to really do another season or a second movie!
I still like SG1 and Atlantis. My favs now are Warehouse 13(edited because I cannot count), Merlin, Sanctuary, and am getting involved in Lost Girl. V.

Gak! NO MORE SPOILERS, PLEASE!! I should have mentioned I have not watched Serenity yet, just Firefly! That comes this week! Now I know it's going to be sad before I've even seen it. However, our dear Uncle Orson stated he felt it was the best movie of 2005, so I will still give it a chance.

Wife and I are big fans. It's the only set of shows I can watch over and over again on Netflix and always come away happy. Even StarTrek franchises stopped doing that to me a few years ago.
It's a pity that most of the remaining active browncoat organizations out there are full of partiers and pagans and such folk. We ought to get together and form an LDS browncoat org.

Dearest CrowGirl, I am so sorry! I made a stupid assumption that by now everyone had seen Serenity! I'll try to post Spoilers ahead of time from now on. V

My 23-yo son turned the whole family onto Firefly a year ago when he bought the boxed set of the tv series and the movie. I was disappointed by the movie -- left too many questions unanswered.
Spoiler Alert! Divert your eyes now if so inclined. . . .
I was particularly annoyed that the writers killed off the preacher in "Serenity" without explaining his background. I don't like it when a show leave a lot of loose strings. Makes me think that the writers didn't know what to do and just left it hanging.

I finally watched Serenity. It was very good, but a difficult film to watch at times. I did not know how much I was invested in these characters until (SPOILER ALERT in case there's anyone else out there who hasn't seen this flick) they started dying. I suspected Shepherd Book would be one, but when Wash went so quickly, I cried out and immediately burst into tears. I can't remember the last time I reacted that quickly and intensely to a character in a film. And that it was the non-warriors to go really struck close to tender spots in me.
I'm okay with Book's past not being revealed. Sure, it probably was a cheap writing stunt all along, but many people have pasts they would rather have die with them instead of being revealed. Book was a Shepherd, and had left things behind. He wanted his present to speak for him, not his past. I feel that way myself.
It was well-written, with great dialogue and wit, and didn't go for the Hollywood ending. I'll give Whedon credit for that. War is like those last several minutes; whether on the battlefield or in a more personal setting. Doing the right thing is not always the easy thing, but we do it anyway.
Yeah, it left some things open in the hopes there would be more. I would have liked to see how this ragtag family dealt with their losses, and their gains. I guess that's where fan fiction comes in--the possibilities are endless.
So, thanks everyone, for speaking so highly of this little series over the years. I'm glad to have met the people on Serenity.

quote: He and Zoe were such an improbable match, but it was absolutely believable.
I've recently started the series again for the third time. Last night they were captured and interrogated by the alliance. I still love Zoe's argumentative refusal to discuss her marriage - even refusing to say she loves her husband because "I don't see how that's relevant". And then they can't shut up Wash and his reasons for why his wife is so cool.
I'm trying to memorize his speech, complete with all the gestures and facial expressions.

Which episode are you writing about, LoudmouthMormon? It's been too long since I've watched the series to place your clues.
